Thanks to Gordy that I have a chance to participate in V-bench posting. Finally completed this piece (old Art Girona) over last long weekend. 1st attempt in painting Tartan trousers, quite a challenge. Crtitiques and comments welcome.

    Happy modelling

Very nice painting Allan. I've managed a few kilts but never had the nerve to try the trews - painting a plaid around the legs must have been a nightmare!

Congratulations Allan! I really like the tones generally, and the trews are fantastic - not just the detailing but the shading and highlighting too. Keep up the good work!

    Hi Guys,
Thanks for the complement... and thanks Dave/Edward for the new word I learnt today "Trews". I'll remember that.

Edward, the highlight and shadow were applied in many layers. Based red was "heavily" shadowed and highlighted, then follow by each layer of different color build up and I did highlight and shadow every color rather than applying overall sephia wash and light buff highlight ...this method is very time consuming but quite happy with the end result..not sure if I will try another one though!

    Hi Allan

Nice work! I like this period very much. Imagine wearing heavy wool serge jacket and trews in 40 degree heat.

Your brushwork on the tartan is excellent. Getting the lines to meet round the legs is the difficult bit for me. I also like the overall faded look of the guy!

    Good stuff!

Wow! That's probably the best tartan I've ever seen and I really like the muted tones and shadowing. Do you use that approach for all your painting? The only painter I've ever seen get those muted colors like that is Roger (BillyTurnip).

    All the best,
    Dan

iirc the soldier depicted belongs to the 72nd (or Duke of Albany's Own Highlanders)
Regiment of Foot otherwise known as The Seaforth Highlanders.

Allan again compliments for a job well done . I agree with you with regards the muted tones but for richer reds I tend to start with arather dark red and work on the highlights with red. That way I make sure that the red remains as rich as possible, obviously depending on subjct. I hate to highlight rich reds with anything, being orange, pink or any other colour except for special effects. Well, that's my two pennies worth

    Hi Stephan,

Thanks for the knowledge sharing and absolutely agree with you. Currently I am working on a "Red" templar medieval knight.. Using approach you're describing... hopefully it it turn out good!!! Chao.

Allan be careful with this one. The subject might be more prone to having more muted reds I believe
