Really just starting out with figures (on and off plastic kit modeller for years)
Interest in American Civil War, American War of Independance and Napoleonic era's mainly.

Are there any beginner tips for good manufacturers to start on?
Or it just a case of not getting too drawn in by illustrations and keep it simple to start with?

Lots of great stuff out there these days.
I've just finished an ACW figure by FeR which was 75mm. Excellent casting and a joy to paint (even though it's not really my era) I'd recommend them without hesitation
They also do some nice busts if that sort of thing appeals (Nap who's a moderator and great bust painter on here I think has a few for sale at the moment?)

SK Miniatures, Historex Agents and El Greco Miniatures all have figures which might appeal so well worth taking a look at their websites to see what you fancy.

There's lots of help available if you need references or help with techniques.
