I'm sure I read that Rommel was one of the most respected generals and was know for his fair treatment of prisoners and his refusal to carr out the commando order. I'm pretty sure he was part of a plot that tried to kill and was nicely asked to kill himself when it failed, just saying.

True indeed. But before it all went pear shaped he was a good saluting lapdog....

I you look past the Nazi party stuff and read his combat record and what he was like as a man I'm sure you'd maybe be able to make a more informed opinion.

Pretty sure he was a comparatively honourable man fighting for gangsters. He was also a difficult boss, ambitious and a careerist, in common with almost all the other GFMs. I think Winston paid tribute to him in the House. Calling him a Nazi is far too simplistic, unless you are if the ilk to call every member of the Wehrmacht a Nazi. He was approached to take part in the July plot by Stauffenberg's cousin, who reported to the conspirators that he had agreed. His family and David Irving deny this (but who cares what David Irving says now days). To my knowledge he is not documented to have committed or been indirectly involved in the commission of a war crime so he has a relatively clean image. My opinion only.

As I previously bought superb Alexandro's' von Richthofen bust, this goes on my list.

Yes, some PF members read historical books, but the important thing is that our forum is about figure not about political opinion !

Correct but I think when discussing personality figures there is room for civil debate on their characters without moving across the politics line....recognizing the adage that war is politics carried out through other means (Clausewitz?) Emphasis on civil. :)

As a sidenote to this outstanding bust with a great likeness:
German Officers of the Wehrmacht (and many of the Waffen SS likewise) were used to the tradition of the former Reichswehr that German soldiers were not allowed to become members of any political party or to get involved in political activities. Sometimes these former regulations of the Weimar Republic were used as an excuse to deny wishes of the Nazi regime to get involved in the Nationalsocialist party or on the other hand to not take part in hostile actions against the Nazi regime.
Therefore Rommel like many of his comrades became never a member of any political party although he was at times "Hitler`s favorite general".
If you like and need stereotypes call him a Nazi but in this case all German soldiers were some kind of Nazis.
It is very easy to judge these people from todays perspective while you have nothing to fear when going public with wise and of course always well researched verdicts about them. They had back then to be aware of the fact that one careless remark or action could mean trouble for themselves and their families.

    My two cents, Martin

OK.. I'm prejudiced..Married to Polish girl..Living not many miles from Treblinka...The simple fact is, they started it. Most, enthusiastically following the devil on his coat-tails..Apologies for stating my opinion.. As an Englishman I don't like them and never will..Maybe his sense of honour and duty clouded his judgment.End of comments.

While I respect your opinion, this isn't the place, as you yourself have noted. Thank you for cutting it off there. Now back to modelling.

I have to say that this is probably one if the finest combinations of personality sculpting and painting I have seen. It will be very hard to replicate even for the skilled modeller. I keep going back to look at the insignia and scarf.
