Hi folks

Legion Miniatures continue to release at regular intervals so lets have a look at one I received

The subject is a Russian General that I had not known too much about ...till now !!!

Aleksey Petrovich Yermolov/

His own military skill was highlighted during the Napoleonic wars as you will see here:

During the 1805 Campaign, Yermolov served in the rear and advance guards and distinguished himself at Amstetten and Austerlitz. Promoted to colonel on 16 July 1806.

He was promoted to major general on 28 March 1808 and was appointed inspector of horse artillery companies. In 1811, he took command of the guard artillery company and in 1812, became the Chief of Staff of the 1st Western Army.

Yermolov fought at Smolensk and Lubino (Valutina Gora) for which he was promoted to lieutenant general on 12 November 1812

For action at the Great Redoubt, Yermolov received the Order of St. Anna (1st class). During the rest of the campaign, he served as a duty officer in the headquarters of the main Russian army and fought at Maloyaroslavets.

On 3 December 1812, he was recalled to the main headquarters where he became the Chief of Staff of the Russian army. Three weeks later, he was appointed commander of the artillery of the Russian armies.

During the European campaigns of 1813 and 1814, Yermolov was in charge of the artillery corps of the allies his skill at command proved crucial to their success in the Battle of Kulm.

In 1813, he fought at Lützen, and Bautzen and at Kulm where he was decorated with the Prussian Iron Cross.

In 1814, he distinguished himself in the battle around Paris and was awarded the Order of St. George on 7 April 1814.

Prep

Having seen quite a few of Legions releases I was looking forward to minimal prep ...well I certainly wasn't unhappy .....

• 2 casting posts and a fine line to sand on the underside and tiny air hole to fill
• Casting post from under neck to remove and fit head
• Slight raised rounds on epaulettes to sand level
• Make up 2 part base if you choose to use this

As usual the parts were in a nice laser cut box with a unpainted picture of the piece on the lid , inside parts were in a clear bag and sandwiched between foam layers

Initial thoughts

• Very smooth casting
• Very little prep
• Minimum of parts to deal with
• Undercuts are very well done
• A simple looking subject but certainly a really good subject...not too much "bling" to worry about

Parts consist of just 4 parts ...torso, head and 2 parts to the base

Looking at the pieces

Torso


This is a one piece casting of the subject wearing a overcoat with the upper parts folded back onto the chest on each side, the arms are cut at a slight angle with both having good strong folds and creases

Underneath he wears the uniform with the neck order hanging at a slight angle at the collar on a ribbon

The work on the folded back material is very good with well cast openings at the top , the edges are finely edged with the button holes nicely defined , buttons on each side and the epaulettes are well rounded and with a design on of the eagle , not overworked which is good to see but enough to assist the painting

Moving up to the collar on the coat this sits high as seen in pictures and uniforms again we have fine edging going all the way round, the collar is thin so be careful

The under uniform itself is a plain one with small buttons leading up to the neck order this is a really good shape but plain with no details ...a good blank canvas for detail painting

The ribbon around the neck is sitting into the lower neck with some nice folds , painting will be no issue as the area is easy to get to

The heavily tasselled epaulettes are very sharp in their definition as is the crescent , no excess resin to sort out where they meet the uniform

On the review piece they had a slight raised rounded surface but easy to sand back level ........ I am looking at it really closely with my optivisor!!!!



Head


Looking straight ahead , the sculptor has in my opinion captured the man well , the nose is shaped well as are the eye details particularly the upper eyelids , the fleshwork of the cheeks and chin are good ....with the same care being done on the ears

Above the lip we have the slightly drooping moustache , with texture , the eyebrows are the same , but slightly raised , this movement is reflected in the upper eylids

The hair is styled as per pictures of the man good work on the strands slightly sweeping forward at the sides leading onto a fine pair of side whiskers

Fit into the neck area on torse is simple and easy with accurate cutouts





Base Pieces

A new way to have the base , coming in 2 pieces , fitting together well , when in position the base is just under 20 mm in height ...as I said you could replace this with a brass rod ...the choice is yours



The T piece fits onto the underside shaping :

The circular part fits against the curve .

Final Thoughts

This is a good release , well cast with not too much to get worried about in details , painting will bring out the subject well , paying particular attention to the facial features will bring dividends




There are others in "The Greatest Men" series .....all are well worth a look at ......more re Napoleonic subjects
