Multiple types and configurations from chemical oxygen supply systems to particulate masks...

The Proto mask was designed to provide breathing oxygen from cylinders and allow safe entry into known hazardous industrial atmospheres, including tunnels with reduced oxygen levels and possible air contaminants. It was explored for war time use, but only as a back-up when all other protective masks failed.

The PH mask (aka Hypo) was the first mask developed for the soldier. It was rushed into service, but did an adequate job for limited periods. The PH had to be impregnated with Hypo solution just prior to use. The PH had to be used with gas proof eye goggles, as if the soldier's vision wasn't obstructed enough by the PH mask glass lenses!

The small box respirator replaced the PH helmet and proved much more successful. In between the PH helmet and the development of the small box respirator, there was also a large box respirator with much greater volume of protective activated charcoal, paper filters, etc. but it was not selected for general use. I don't know why.
