Realistic qualitative painting of flat figures is very rare :)

Thank you Andrey, that is very nice of you to say so. It is difficult to make a compromise between realism and forcing the shade and highlights with flats so I'm glad you think I have achieved it with this figure.

I think the credit for the impression of movement belongs to the engraver, in this case Ludwig Frank (1870-1957) one of the best.

    Thanks Richie.
Not quite homebrew and turps this month we're going away for a fortnight but I've got plenty of reading material to take with me for flat inspiration.

Thank you very much Don. I think I'm beginning to get the hang of oils now.

Nicely done Roger on a great subject. Are you painting with water based oils?

Keith, yes I'm using Winsor & Newton Artisan water soluble oils, however I'm using white spirit to thin them. I paint in the dining room so out of consideration I went down this route route and then thought I'd try white spirit.... nobody's noticed yet. :playful:
