Thanks very much Dan. I've had this waiting for the brushes for awhile but have just had my interest in the Franco-Prussian War reawakened, I think it was Colin's drummer that did it, so thought it was time to crack on with it.

I've done some work on the horse today.

The basecoat is Burnt Umber and some Ivory Black for the legs.
First highlights have been done with Cadmium Orange and some deeper shadows and cast shadows beneath the reins with Vandyke Brown.
When it's dry I'll strengthen the shadows some more and continue highlighting.

The horse has got that trademark 3D look that you have made your own.

Not too much Roger, for me the horse has all of the rounded 'illusion' that you guys look for in a piece.

I think that's the difficulty with any painting genre Keith, knowing when to stop.

Up early this morning so I did a bit of work on the equipment on the horse and made a start shading and highlighting the jackets of the Cuirassier and Zouave.
