Charles Auguste Joseph FLAHAUT de la Billarderie
Aide de Camp of Marshal Berthier 1812

In the Napoleonic Army Marshals and Generals had normally many assistants in their staff, chosen among the best and faithful officers of the various Corps. Marshal Berthier, the Brigadier General of the Army and keeper of all the military regulations, had always young and brave officers, coming from some noble families of the Empire.

One of his Adc was Charles Auguste Joseph FLAHAUT de la Billarderie, natural and illegitimate son of Talleyrand. Born in Paris in April, the 21 of 1785, engaged in the Hussars Volunteers on 1800, second lieutenant and Adc of Murat on 1802, blessed at an arm on November 1805, then not present at Austerlitz. Captain on February 1806, and “Chef d’escadron” of the 13the Chasseurs à cheval” on January 1807. In Portugal and Spain during the campaigns of 1807 and 1808, he became Adc of Berthier on July 1808. Took part to the Germany campaign on 1809, promoted colonel on May, fought at Wagram on July. Baron of the Empire on 1810. Great equerry of the Queen of Holland Hortensia Beauharnais, daughter of Napoleon’s wife Josephine, and married with the brother of Napoleon, Louis Bonaparte. Involved in a love affair with the Queen, Flahaut was sent in Russian campaign of 1812, one of the seven Adc of Berthier. He came back alive from that terrible experience, and passed in the Napoleon’staff as Adc of the Emperor. Promoted General on 1813, he received also the title of Count of the Empire. After the Waterloo defeat and the definitive fall of Napoleon, Flahaut was disgraced for a short time, but soon rehabilitated, having some political charges, as Ambassador at Wien and London. He died in Paris in September, the 1st of 1870, and his name is written on the Arc de Triomphe.

Flahaut is represented with an undress uniform, used for city duties, established by Berthier on 1807, when he fixed the uniforms for all the Marshals’ Adc. Besides the parade dress, an Hussar style uniform with white dolman, black pelisse and red breeches, Berthier gave to his Adc also this undress red jacket, all embroidered with gold leaves. Instead of the usual white breeches and boots, he wears long red trousers, better for cold time.
