    Hi pF!

We are very pleased to present our newest series of figures, the Franco-Prussian War!! The Franco-Prussian War was fought between the French under Napoleon III and the Prussians of Otto von Bismarck from 1870-1871. The war was provoked by Bismarck to further his agenda of creating a unified German State, rallying the southern German states to his cause who believed France to be the aggressor. A quick series of victories in by the Prussians and Germans in Eastern France lead to the capture of several key cities and Napoleon III himself, leading to the fall of the Second French Empire and the rapid creation of the Third French Republic. The Republican forces were defeated as well culminating in the Siege of Paris. The war ended with the Treaty of Frankfurt in May 1871 and the result of the conflict was a unified German Nation State opening the door for German expansionism and Imperialism. France was ordered to pay significant reparations and to cede Alsace-Lorraine to Germany. The combination of French bitterness and German nationalism resulting from the Franco-Prussian War planted the seeds of the larger First World War some 40 years later. Once again, First Legion we are breaking new ground and showing that we aren't afraid to cover in detail less popular conflicts that have up to this point received little or no coverage at all in the toy soldier world. We hope you like the new range and additional releases will follow over the course of 2019 including Prussian Infantry, Algerians, French Cavalry to name a few.

French Line Infantry 1870-71 has opened this range.

Great figures and interesting to see how the historical background is presented. France literally was the aggressor and declared war on Prussia although the cause for the conflict (a Prince of the Prussian Hohenzollern family had been offered the Spanish throne) was already solved by the renunciation of the candidacy for the throne of Spain. This war was far from being a kind of Prussian-German lightning war with France as an easy prey. The French Army of 1870 had an outstanding reputation and regarded themselves as superior to the German forces. Their military dress was influential for military forces around the world - last but not least for the opposing forces of the American Civil War. The French Chassepot Rifle was one of the most advanced Infantry weapons of this time and far better that the Prussian Dreyse Needle Rifle.
Appalling failures in organization, tactics and outdated artillery on behalf of the French had a significant influence on the initial victories of the German forces. Otherwise the outcome would have been maybe different and Bismarck surely would then never have bragged in his memories that he had a master plan to provoke France and then unite Germany by winning a war. He surely was a great politician but this boastful story was merely providing useful propaganda for other nations that did not like to deal with a united Germany as another major European power. While in Germany the war of 1870 - 71 was called the "German-French-War" the English term was always "Franco-Prussian-War" - ignoring the German cause for reason.

Figures from this period are still rare and the nice figures are more than welcome. Hopefully you consider to release the figures as kits. Looking forward to other subjects in this range!

    Cheers, Martin
