Painting: Oils over an acrylic base throughout for each figure.Pipes and roots were added to the base. The entire base was treated with a primer coat and a bit of cat litter for fine rubble, then a basic tonal coat. Oil washes were used for depth and highlights were dry brushed to complete the appearance.

FLASHMAN in the INDIAN MUTINY 1857

Fanny Duberly didn't arrive in India until the closing stages of the insurrection but seeing as this small diorama is loosely based on a series of historic fiction books anyway, then I've no problem including her in the action...
I suppose I could've just as well called it "THE SIEGE of KRISHNAPUR"......(Ooh, now that's a real easter egg for me to lay. For readers who're unaware, the author was J.G. Farrell and it's an excellent book).



As any fan of George MacDonald Fraser's Flashman books will know, Mrs Elspeth Flashman was an, at times, "outspoken" Scottish Lady Extraordinaire......



...while Grizel de Rothchild was Elspeth's (extremely) disapproving youngest sister.



Figures are all nominal 54mm/60mm in white metal or resin.
There's a couple of the Brits that are straight out the box, but most have been converted to some extent or other from white metal kits/figures.
The unpainted resin Sepoys were kindly sent to me completely gratis by the owner of John Jenkins Designs in Hong Kong after I contacted him and explained the diorama that I wanted to build.
On delivery, they looked to me like they were actually the Master Figures, (either that or, and I want to be perfectly clear about this, they're official copies obtained direct from the manufacturer - I guess they were simply "lying around" in Mr Jenkins' workshop and he was happy enough just to send them off to me for free).
The fact these figures were cast as one complete piece of resin meant that I had to cut the arms off at the elbows so I could get in there with the paintbrush, but I got them painted eventually and then stuck the arms back on with a bit of filler taking care of any gaps.
The buildings are a couple of old scenic items from W.Britains, weathered with various washes and pigments.
The goose is from a ceramic set of birds bought a long time ago down some back-street in Hong Kong.
The Cannon on top of the buildings and the wrecked Howitzer & Limber were from one of my display cases - can't remember the manufacturers.
Groundwork is my usual mix of celluclay, with added sand, flowers and static grass.

Minidiorama de escala 1/35

Worked on a 1/72 scale for five years, paper, cardboard and porexpan have been used, this model represents the city of Orihuela in the province of Alicante (Spain), in the year 718 of our lord.

Both the Arab society of the time and the Christian society coexisted in this city.

In turn, this model is made up of two separate modules equipped with wheels and its own damping system designed by me for transport.

This group of figures picture a dramatic rescue taking place in Helmand Province, Afghanistan in 2009 - 2010. Although their out-of-the-box poses were very good, I decided to add more drama to the piece. New hands and arms were sculpted in some places, missing gear and kit was rendered, and rifles were replaced and detailed. In addition a mixture of DPM and MTP camouflage patterns were rendered and the wounded man was more accurately depicted.
The landscape is simple and draws focus on the squaddies and their dire circumstances. They cut across a barren and unforgiving piece of real estate. Everything is bleached by the sun and sand encrusted by the wind.
There is a sense of loyalty, sacrifice and hope in this small scene. There is also a feeling of desperation in the running poses of the 2 men, and the extraordinary effort they are making to save their fellow squaddie.

Inspired by a photo of my grandfather unloading wounded following a mission to bomb V weapons sites in the Pas de Calais region.

“For Fort Vaux” - 1918 (Vignette)

WW1 French 1/35 battle scene, depicting the late war ARS gas masks; almost direct copies of the German type. Donor kit used : ICM WW1 French. reconfigured/re-sculpted by me.

Fort Vaux became a crucial morale boost to the French in 1916, even in defeat and the Fort surrender. The courage and heroism of the men inspired legions of French soldiers through-out the rest of the great war.

Many of my WW1 diorama’s and vignettes are inspired by the comic writing and illustrations of Charley’s War (battle comics of the 1980’s).

I just completed this diorama the other day. It is the first in a series of smaller vignettes and dioramas with the theme of "Shopping in Long Thanh". Long Thanh was the village that was outside Camp Bearcat, Vietnam and this particular diorama depicts a time when 1LT Brice Barnes of 2d Battalion, 47th Infantry (Mechanized), 9th Infantry Division was returning from a mission with his platoon and decided to stop in Long Thanh to buy some baguettes to go with venison sausage that his father had sent to him. The platoon parked their M113s and some guys went to some of the vendor shops to buy souvenirs for the folks back home while 1LT Barnes visited the local bakery to buy the baguettes.

The two American Soldiers are conversions of Bravo 6 figures with Hornet heads, new arms, original equipment scraped away and replaced, insignia added, and pockets redone with Magic Sculpt. The shoulder holster was added to the figure depicting 1LT Barnes and the original belt area was filled in with Magic Sculpt. The Vietnamese children are from Paracel Miniatures. The Vietnamese woman who is a customer is from Masterbox. The two women working at the bakery are conversions consisting of Masterbox, Dragon, and Callsign Miniature pieces. The cats are from a manufacture that I do not recall the name of. The structure was built using elements from Hansa Systems covered with AK Interactive Industrial Mud that was sanded down when cured to create a stucco effect. The roof is from Victoria Miniatures. The display case is scratch built from sheet styrene. The bread is made from Magic Sculpt. The dishes and bowls of fillings for Banh Mi are from Reality in Scale. The leafy vegetation is from Diorama Respe and the money is from ETA Diorama Accessories. Acrylics were used for all painting. The ERDL camouflage pattern on the privately purchased boonie hat worn by the Soldier carrying a bag containing a flower patterned Ao Dai was copied from a personal example.

WIP Thread

I used Scibor's Dwarven Giant Cannon kit, added Die Bearer and Bromor Hunter. The board, piglet, tufts of grass and posters are a product of Syndicate Co. Electrostatic Grass - Polak, Woodland Scenic.

Any resemblance to existing characters or events is purely coincidental... but is it?
