I was trying to paint this puppy up for MFCA this coming weekend. I am close, but there is too much left to do and i am also having some issues with painting with the Vallejos. I am still near the bottom of the learning curve here. This is the first figure I have tried to paint in the past five years or so; so i am a little rusty to boot. It is a bit like riding a bike - except acrylics are still a novelty for me.

So, rather than rush to finish it (and do a less than ideal job), I made an executive decision to finish it after the show when i will have better control over the final outcome.

    Better luck next time, eh?

    Cheers!! ;):):D:cool:

Yes that really sucks Mike...maybe you should strip it and start over.

I think you made the right decison not to rush but I see no learning curve issues there at all. Looks like acrylics should be marked as "mastered."

Well if that's 'bottom of the learning curve' I for one am F:dead::hungover::wtf:ed on the acrylics front!

Like some of the other posters here, I see no issues at all with your painting, on the contrary - wish I could paint your sculpts like you do paint them yourself
Tell us, how did you achieve that nice leather sheen on the pistol holster and map case ?

Mike if it makes you feel any better, I have been painting with acrylics for as long as I have been painting figures and you know from personal experience I do not achieve nearly the level of work you have achieved here, so if this is the bottom of the learning curve I ought to just give up now.

The leather was painted with Testor paints from the little rectangular bottles. (Sorry if Europeans are not familiar with this grand-daddy of American model paints). The Testor "flat" paint naturally dries with this sheen - especially if the paint is layered in multiple coats. I also use Testor for painting flesh. I am unlikely to change that even if I do convert completely over to acrylics.

Thanks to everybody for the nice comments. I am NOT unhappy with the way the figure is going. I am only saying that I had to work at it to get it that way....

    As do we all Mike.:D

The beauty of this hobby is that we all have our own level of satisfaction with our work. Some are happy to slap a bit of paint on and call it finished and others are perfectionists who aren't happy until everything is perfect.

I'm sure when you decide to call it finished it will be a stunning piece.

I think its coming along nicely Mike . I have the same problem trying to master acrylics , so I still paint mostly in oils and just paint parts of the figure in acrylics .

Looks good to me. You'll get it... took me a while to feel comfortable with the stuff. They still sell little Testors, huh?

Mike, all I see is a beautifully painted figure. I love the leathers and his fur coat.
No matter when you decide to call it done, I am sure he will look outstanding.

The typical self doubt talk of a painter who seeks perfection!
Looks good to me, not shabby at all.

    Hi Mike

I think you are being a bit hard on yourself. I particularly like the fur coat. Give yourself a break and come back to it afresh and hopefully you will see your talented work it in a different light.

Very good paintwork. I gave up acrylic, and stay on the oils (a litte to old i think).
I wish i good get this result with acrylic.
