    Very nice work. All of the different patterns on sleeves and cape are done very well.

    Was the leather gauntlet and hat painted with the pointillism technique?

    Hi
    Thanks for the comments, yes the hat and the gloves were done with pointalism, it seems to be a good technique for doing leather or felt, it does take a bit of time but well worth the effort

    I've been experimenting with pointillism and I agree; it doe's bump up the realism a notch when using it on leather and felt.

    Will someone please tell me what Pointillism is and how to do it

    Hi Ron
    Basically its similar to stippling, but you use a finer brush and just highlight or shade putting very fine dots on the bit being painted using different shades of colour to add highlights or shadows. Dave Youngquist from the Mich toy company has done a great blog on the subject on you tube, he uses acrylics but it works just as well with oils

    Ron;

    Pointillism is nothing new; the technique has been around and used in the fine art world ever since it was developed by impressionism artist Georges Seurat in 1886.

    It seems that recently though, pointillism is starting to be used more and more by figure painters. Pointillism should not be confused with stippling, they are somewhat different.

    Pointillism is a good technique for doing leather and felt hats.

    Here is a demo video done by Dave Youngquest at MTS, he explains what pointillism is and how he uses it for highlighting and shadowing figures.
