Hello. After a long hiatus from figure painting I've decided to jump back in the game. I use to paint with W&N Series 7 brushes and I know what to expect from them--they are the best. I've been hearing about Davinci #36 brushes and how they rival W&N series 7 in quality, performance and longevity but, at half the price of what one pays for W&N.

Are the Davinci #36 brushes on par with W&N Series 7, or should I pay the extra cash and stick with W&N ?

    Thanks.

I'm a Rosemary fan too. I've tried W&N, couldn't get used to them, maybe it was the price that was putting me off.

I've tried Rosemary and Co brushes with mixed results-which ones are best for oils?
Currently I've reverted to series 7's which I buy on line at 25% discount from Jacksons art supplies.

I've recently bought a number of Rosemary brushes and so far they are holding up well. I was disappoined in the lat couple of Series 7's which lost their points and shape a lot faster than they used to.

Einion, thanks for the heads up. I can attest to the W&N "USE TO BE" the best. I bought a set of Series 7 back in the late 70's and I used them on a plethora of figures up to the late 90's...the day I put them away in long term storage, there points were still as sharp as the day I bought them new. I would be using those same brushes now, but the kids got into them and used them on a school art project a few years back and; well, that did them in.

In the link you posted, you mentioned Davinci; what is your opinion on them as far as painting acrylics?

Nap, thanks for the link. I read what they had to say and checked out there line of pure Sables---So far I like what I'm seeing and, I may just give them a go.

What Series # do you recommend for acrylics?

    Thanks.

    Hi Marius,
To be honest any from Rosemary's tange will be no problem for acrylics but I use the following :

    Series 33 and 99

If you want some flat ones then the Eclipse range are very good.

Hope this helps feel free to pm me if I can help further

Sorry, just to check - for using with acrylics or are you asking about the Da Vinci acrylic paint? Presuming the former, the Maestros work perfectly

They make two kinds of round, one with a full belly and the other slimmer. I don't know which I've used but presumably they're equally good, just one holds more paint.

The series 33 are very good. Well worth a good look through the online catalogue lots of unusual (to me) brushes for feathering, stippling etc

Sorry, I was meaning; are the Davinci brushes good for painting in acrylics? Also, Is there bristles a little on the stiff side? Which is what I prefer

Winsor & Newton serie 7 and Da Vinci are the best choice, but remember that the brush don't make the artist.

SO TRUTH, but it helps alot when you have a good brush to deliver a descent figure on the fora.
