The Civic Guard (garde civique in french, burgelijke wacht in flemich) is the armed militia created in October 1830 in the young independent Belgium.
It is organized at city and community level, originally in all municipalities with more than 30,000 inhabitants and made up of citizens between 21 and 50 years old, primarily young single people and widowers without children, who are not part of the army.

Mainly composed of infantry but in the large cities inf and cavalry.
The Civic Guard is made up of Companies, commanded by a captain. The ordinary service consists in mounting guard, carrying out patrols for the safety of people, the conservation of properties, in addition to its role of maintaining order, it is also called to suppress the public fire service.
The Civic Guard is +/- comparable to the National Guard in France.
During the First World War, the Civic Guard was called all over Belgium, and is responsible for assisting the gendarmerie and the police for maintaining order, but being also an armed force, it fights the German advance and retarded the german advance to Paris.
This infuriated the German high command, which threatened to shoot all captured civic guards and called them'' terrorists''.
Numerous of them were shot and.
There resistance led also to reprisals from the German army. Then began the atrocities and destruction affecting populations and civilian property, such as the burning of the university library in Louvain and, among others, the massacres of Arlon, Ethe-Latour, Tamines, Aarschot, Beerse, Roeselare (Roeselare) , Spontin, Anloy, Neufchâteau, Dinant, Handzame, ...

On October 13, 1914, the Civic Guard was dismissed by a government decision and taken over entirely as an armed group.
