"The war began in my front yard and ended in my parlor."

It's about the US Civil War and the man who said that, rightly by the way, was Wilmer McLean and lived from 1814 to 1882 ...:

The grocer McLean owned a house when the civil war broke out, stupidly in the middle of the battlefield of "Bull Run" (or as the Confederate said: "Manassas") ...:

This is exactly where the first battle of the Civil War took place on July 21, 1861, McLean's house was the quarters of CSA-General Pierre Gustave Toussaint Beauregard ...:

During the fighting, a cannonball struck McLean's kitchen.

After that, the Confederates confiscated the house as a hospital. They paid a token rent, but it was ridiculously low.

A second battle took place at the same location from August 29, 1862 to August 30, 1862 - Second Manassas.

Again the house suffered a lot, but what was worse for McLean was that his farmland was badly devastated.

The house still stands today - and is a national monument ...:

So McLean (who was now supplying the Confederates with food) decided to make a fresh start in - he thought - the far more peaceful south of Virginia, sold his house and land and bought a new house - this one ...:

The new house was in - Appomattox!

In McLean's parlor on Sunday afternoon, April 9, 1865 (Palm Sunday), CSA-General Robert E. Lee, accompanied only by his adjutant Lieutenant Colonel Charles Marshall...

... signed the official surrender of the Confederate Army to Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant.

This McLean house is still standing today, also as a national monument ...

... and is often the backdrop for documentaries and feature films!

After the surrender of the CSA, it initially served a Union general as quarters (Edward Ord, center) ...

... and was then almost completely plundered by Union soldiers.

All that remains of the furnishings is the original table and chair on which Lee signed the deed of surrender ...

... as well as the side table and the leather-covered "Jasper" swivel chair on which Grant had sat ...:

The Union commanders protected this furniture because they knew its historical value even then ...:

So McLean is absolutely right with his famous quote!

Good stuff Martin! The black and white photo of the Union officers on the courthouse steps shows just how "un-uniform" their uniform was.
