I couldn’t resist starting this chap. It’s a lovely sculpt, I think the challenge for me will be getting the highlights and so on right on the face under the hat. I might try osl for the first time and see how that goes.

So far he is primed and I’ve had a stab at the eyes, brown is tough though.

Hi, yep agree it's looking good, I agree with what Nap said about the eyes but it's early days yet. The idea of OSL sounds like a heck of a challenge, how do you simulate light through the jungle canopy? I know you meant shade from the brim of his hat and to pull that off will be impressive.

Thanks, it's an interesting one isn't it? In fairness the Chindits weren't always surrounded by jungle and the territory they operated in was quite varied so side on lighting from a sunset for example could work. The alternative, I suspect, is just to paint it as normal and rely on the hat to provide natural shadow.

If I am honest I'll probably go with my usual strategy of looking up what Mike Butler does and trying to do something vaguely similar.

That sounds like a good plan actually, must admit when I've been faced with the dilema I have 2 options, ignore it and crack on as normal or make the peak smaller, not an option with the slouch hat though. Be interested to see how you do this, so good luck and may your brushes forever keep their points.

I’m still playing with the face. I tried a different approach using a different colour pallet for more of a tanned look but it didn’t work so I’m going back over him with my usual colours. When I’m happy I think I’ll start trying some warmer tones and try to add in some dirt etc. It’s an interesting face to paint, not ‘craggy’ so highlights aren’t as prominent and I feel like me needs wear, scarring, spots and other imperfections to bring out his character.

He is coming together nicely, I like the "grubby" look you are getting with the face, really suits the theme of the figure. I think you are right about skin blemishes, they would add to it.

Although he didn't interest me as a model initially I am starting to like this bust, there is an interesting character in there. I kind of wish he was available in 1/6th.

I like the darkening around the eyes, really gives him that tired look.

I think Lucas took inspiration from a period photo for the other cord but I presume it would be for a compass or even a pocket watch, morphine syrettes or whatever else would be handy to you keep close at hand in such a tough environment
