This diorama started out as an entry for armor categories for both IPMS and AMPS shows four years ago. Because it was initially intended to be judged as an armor entry, I limited the figure count to just the guy providing security. I did envision using it as a diorama at a later date and finally have done so.
This diorama depicts a M113 belonging to 1st Platoon, Charlie Company, 2d Battalion, 47th Infantry (Mechanized), 9th Infantry Division pulling security for some engineers during Operation Santa Fe in December 1967. Since the company was also securing a Fire Support Base that was responsible for providing Artillery support for the land clearing operation, only part of the unit went out with the engineers while the rest secured the perimeter of the FSB. C-13, also known as "Harassment ", would go out with only four or five squad members on such occasions. In this scene, the squad leader is supervising the driver teaching another Soldier in the task of adjusting track tension while a fourth Soldier provides security behind the .50.
The figures are mostly converted Bravo 6 figures with the exception of the guy adjusting track tension which is one that I sculpted and will be produced by Custom Dioramics. The M113 is based on the AFV Club kit which has been backdated from a diesel powered M113A1 to a gasoline powered M113.
I took these photos before I added M16s in the scene, so there are three that are in the final version.
Thanks for looking.
Cheers,
James
