I had to take a break from Kalakaua. I was looking at the sculpt and resource images too long and need to come back to it with fresh eyes. I started working on the Abe bust having pretty much abandoned the Indian fighter abe.

Beautiful work, the likeness is spot on. Do you use 3DCoat?

Aumakua this was done in Sculptris, Mehmixer and Hexagon 2.0. I've never heard of 3D Coat is it free.

I see, great combo of applications. 3DCoat is not free; it's a very decent application to make stuff for 3d print.

BTW, the new meshmixer released in March has a printer setup. They have mostly makerbot and a bunch of Stratasys machines and two type A printers (what ever they are). It is kind of cool because you can see the project as it fits on the print platform. There is even an option to hollow out the project before printing that allows you to set the thickness of the walls in mm but the preview doesn't seem to work or I haven't figured out how to make it work yet. I think it only works once you export to the printer. Now, if I could just afford a good printer :(

I take that back, it only allows you wall thickness of 1mm or more,,, bummer. But perhaps those printers won't print finer thicknesses than that.

Thanks everyone. I do this a lot; I think I'm done and no sooner have I sent it off to the printers when I realize I missed something. So here it is, I think I'm done,,,, but I'll keep it around for a couple of days before sending it off to be printed so I'm sure I have finished it.

Here is a collection of screen captures I made while doing abe. It is very much abridged and sped up but it is still 12 minutes long.
