WIP A Pair of Grieve’s from CGS.

Having cleared a bit of space on the bench after finishing the Elite Gendarme, decided to make a start on the latest acquisitions from CGS Miniatures, the David Grieve sculpted Lifeguard, Dismounted Order and Major, Black Watch. Both are exquisite pieces, beautifully cast and with very little clean up required. The face of the Black Watch Major is a gem and there is plenty of detail to get stuck into in the uniform although I must admit I’m dreading the tartan. The Lifeguard at first seems a little more reserved detail wise but the helmet detail is superbly rendered. So far it’s just the faces in oils. I’ve started on the Lifeguard helmet using Darkstar metallics. My intention is to give it a light wash of black oil paint then use pure silver to raise the shine. If you like painting faces you won’t be disappointed with either of these busts. 840C1099-0BE7-4F4F-803F-5F89AB1511FE.jpeg 3FAEA55F-CF10-4005-B44D-D8921066125B.jpeg DB349B4C-7327-4907-999F-43599A2DE2FA.jpeg 738A04EA-FD4C-44F0-97F9-03092592D7DD.jpeg 4665F338-5412-4160-BC96-99A722718EDF.jpeg ADE55EED-880D-4B0E-AE34-232F2253856F.jpeg CE4B421D-D219-43B1-92F5-1450C219BA1F.jpeg 4BD43592-F28C-45D3-98CB-387880FCBCE8.jpeg 5F4911CA-F9D6-4274-9615-294D88E2BCCB.jpeg

    Hi Neal

Definately following you on these ....great faces

I presume the helmet on the LG is cast as one with the head ....easy access for eyes ??

    Happy benchtime

Thanks Nap. It is a one piece casting but not too bad to get at the eyes, fortunately. Had a quick look back at yours and Barrie’s takes on the Black Watch Major for reference.

I didn't know David Grieve was still around , faces look superb nice work in oils , re Dark star metallics ! I find them a bit grainy , I know other people swear by them
but these guys generally are from the fantasy world of modelling .
Look forward to your updates and THE TARTAN  :)

Thanks for the comments Ronaldinho. I still use some oil metallics and paste but so far I quite like the Darkstar paint.

Been away for a few days so this is the first chance I’ve had to update. I’ve managed to get the tunics painted in oils although there seems to be a little reaction between the oils and the undercoat on the sleeve of the Black Watch Officer so I’ll go back over this once it’s thoroughly dry. I’ve started to lay in the basecoat for the bonnet and started on the plume and diced band. As for the Lifeguard, again managed to do the tunic and laid in a base for the facings. I’m slowly building up the colours on the helmet. 4E952683-811F-4BC9-91FD-090103FCA322.jpeg DE4C4E82-219E-4061-B6E5-CEA349E25D2B.jpeg 03AAFDA3-FB04-4ADB-9ED8-75EEBB364EAE.jpeg 43F80476-0A2B-4BB0-9F9D-2362E23A8029.jpeg A732431E-9EF2-42E4-B42E-BAD0AE270585.jpeg B9F50C68-75B9-4E46-A85D-55AAAE38EB99.jpeg

    Hi Neal

Both are coming on really nicely , not normally into modern stuff but I do like that Lifeguard , the detail is really starting to come through on the helmet

    Looking forward to more updates

    Happy bench time
