A Day in History: The Olive Branch Petition

... on April 19, 1775, the British colonies in North America stand for full equality in aparliament ("No Taxation Without Representation!") strive for independence by parlement or on the verge of an extensive war with the mother country.

In May 1775, the political representatives of the colonies met in Philadelphia at the second Continental Congress to discuss how to proceed...:

Under the leadership of John Dickinson ...

... from Delaware a major faction continues to seek compensation with the king.

Dickinson and his political struggles are particularly difficult, especially against the representatives of the states in which combat has already taken place - and it will not get easier when a serious battle at Bunker Hill occurs during the current Congress (June 17, 1775) .

Nevertheless, Dickinson and his faction insist on trying to find a peaceful settlement with the British crown and submit a draft resolution on July 5.

It states that the undersigned are intended to “avoid further bloodshed” and “impending misfortune that threatens the British Empire”. Furthermore, it expresses "the continued loyalty to the king", to whom a ceasefire is proposed until the colonial problems with the "mother country" are resolved.

This resolution will be adopted on July 8, 1775 resolved by the Continental Congress - and has gone down in history as "Olive Branch Petition"...:

Members of the Continental Congress are on their way to England immediately after the adoption of this peace resolution - and reach the British capital on August 14th.

    But King George III.

... supported by his advisors, who are tough on the colonists in America - refuses to receive the emissaries or even to take note of the decision they have with them!

On July 1, George III. has written:

"I am of the opinion that when once these rebels have felt a smart blow, they will submit; and no situation can ever change my fixed resolution, either to bring the colonies to due obedience to the legislature of the mother country or to cast them off! "

Instead, a few days later, on August 23, 1775, the stubborn monarch had his own declaration of will published, the so-called "Proclamation of Rebellion" ...

... in which the colonies are accused of the illegal armed uprising, which the crown now has to put down.

This makes the position of Dickinson and his friends in the Continental Congress politically unsustainable!

The path to the War of Independence is now the only possible one ...
