    The man who liberated Auschwitz...

A lot is being reported these days about the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration and extermination camp, which is the 78th anniversary today.

At least in the German media, there is almost nothing to read about the liberator of Auschwitz.

The Auschwitz camp was liberated by a raiding party of the 106th Rifle Brigade, which was part of the 100th Infantry Division of the 1st Ukrainian Front.

The commander of this raiding party was Captain (later Major) Anatoly Pavlovich Shapiro...

... who broke down the gate at exactly 9 a.m. on the morning of January 27, 1945 and was the first Red Army soldier to enter the camp while his soldiers were defusing the German mines buried in front of the main entrance to the camp.

Shapiro's soldiers also found macabre relics of the German SS killers, such as several containers with the death gas "Zyklon B"...:

Shapiro, born on January 18, 1913 (our calendar year) in Konstantinograd (today: Kostyantynohrad, Kharkiv Oblast, free Ukraine), was himself a Jew.

After the war he was demobilized and worked as a civil engineer on the construction of various hydroelectric power plants in the Soviet Union. For his work he received the State Prize of the Soviet Union.

Because of increasing anti-Semitism in Russia, Shapiro emigrated to the United States in 1992, where he lived in New York and Coney Island.

A memorial was erected for Shapiro in Auschwitz...:

In addition, he was posthumously awarded the medal and title of "Hero of Ukraine" in 2006...:

    Never ever forget ...ever

We can only imagine the sheer horrors that were witnessed by him and his men ...the delight and reactions from the prisoners are beyond words

    Cheers Martin
