Just a quick follow on from my previous post that showed legs added (there's a surprise) by me to this Carl Reid sculpt retailed by SK Miniatures,
As I said legs were added a couple of months ago by myself and the figure has now been undercoated in Humbrol matt enamels, the tunic etc is at present in need of a wash over with a very thin coat of Raw umber oils mixed with copious white spirit, once dry I will begin with the oils on the tunic & trousers, hopefully this afternoon?
The head and face is completely finished and I'm keeping the Foreign Service helmet in this toned down white/ khaki colour, as per the fact that the helmets were all locally died/stained with tea or coffee to help them blend in to the surrounding country...even though they still wore Red tunics and white equipment (n)
Face was painted in my usual oils over humbrol enamels
I will try and post more as I progress with him
Hope you like it so far
    Cheers

Cold tea actually makes a decent wash for white or light browns! Worked for me anyway...

Love the face and work so far Jimbo (and despite Nap's influence I still think they look better with legs) ;)

Cracking work, especially the face. If my sources are correct the webbing was also dyed to a dark buff colour and the tunics were a reddish/terracotta after years of service fighting the Xhosa prior to the Zulu campaign. If Ritchie is about he is a superb font of knowledge on this period and is extremely helpful.

One other thing, most of the trousers from both battalions were torn and patched from the thorny terrain so possibly a patched knee would finish off the campaign look. Ian Knight's excellent book "Zulu" published by Windrow and Greene is a very good source. There is also a description and a colour plate showing a length of cow hide just forward of the metal working parts of the Martini Henry rifle which protected the firers hand during prolonged volley fire.
