When painting the Russian flag - this is the template:

The Carabiniers captured the flag of the Infantry Regiment "Libava" at Borodino ...

  10. Thanks Martin, there is also this one, black and red. I do have a book where the colours are listed, they are all very much the same with different colours so some options are open.

Hi Graham - first I thougt the same.

But take a close look at the flag:

The ist no double eagle in the Center, the eagle has only one head.

And the Monogramms in the edges are not the ones of the Russian Czar Aleksandr I.

We can see there the Monogramms "FR".

"FR" means "Friedrich Wilhelm" - King of Prussia.

So it's not a Russian, but an Prussian flag, and there were no Prussian troops at Borodino. The flags looked very similar to each other, for the Russians copied the Prussian Model.

The flag shown in your picture is a bataillon flag of the 4th Prussian infantry Regiment (East Prussian No. 3), which was captured another time.

    Here the regimental flag...:

2nd and 3rd Bataillon of this Regiment had red-orange centers.

Personally I think the Libava Regiment is the one I will be doing. I think the colours will stand out nicely against the normal blues and reds of other Napoleonic pieces in my collection.

Very nice Gra, very nice indeed mate!

    Hi Graham!

Dont trust any source with "1800"! A Russian flag from 1800 can't be carried at Borodino!

Up to 1801 there reigned Czar Pavel (Paul) I. (died in 1801) in Russia and the new Czar Aleksandr I. (reigned from 1801) gave new flags in 1803 to all Russian regiments. THESE Flags were carried at Borodino, and they were different!

  19. Thanks Martin, we are going a bit off track now as discussing other colours of Borodino, according to my sources 1797, 1800, 1803 and 1806 colours were all carried at Borodino depending on the regiment.

As you have said in any case the colour can be painted as the 'Libava' Inf Regt portrayed in the Detaille painting and I'm sure the customer will do some research.

Can we leave the colour debate now please, I've been here before and only wanted to show a new piece, if customers like it then great.
    Thanks and best wishes
