I would love to know for sure.
As teenager my old ACF instructors both ex-scots guards, described it as a tripod mounting ring for an instructors
    aim training aid !

    Does anyone have the pamphlet?

Very interesting figure, and great start. Uniform camouflage is great and wood on the riffle is amazing :). Happy painting on this one ;)

Great stuff. Interesting use of watercolour pencils, not a medium I would have thought of (no comments please). Must try that out, do you recommend any brand or colour selection?

I found this on an Enfield shooters forum, it sounds reasonable and it goes with what I remember from my cadet days with the .303. The loop was part of the trigger guard mechanism so maybe it just wasn't changed as the different marks evolved. I checked pams and it just comes up under trigger guard.

The loop was first used to secure the magazine by a a link/chain from the MLM Mk1 up to and including the Mk1 SMLE, the loop was reintroduced with the changes to the future manufacture of the MkIII & the introduction of the MkIII* in 1916, & was used to secure the action cover.
