You have a good eye and I agree with most of your comments - thanks for the critique. Seriously a lot of help. Addition of the hair will help with the age illusion.

@Colin, coming along great. The only resemblance to Layton is the endless forehead, soulless eyes and the 70's porn-'stash

@Patrick, it was so much easier when Quebec came to Toronto in the guise of the "French Connection" dancers:love: . We never made them write an exam in English, that's for sure. They were the only reason I kept a death grip on halting High School French... merci.

I took some of Patrick's useful advice. Jaw line has been changed toward the ear. Bags under his eyes filled a bit. Sunken area beside right eye filled. Added to his lower lip. I did not change the furrows beside his nose as other pictures I have of Papineau (for example this one of him with his dog Bobs) in the field show these to be quite pronounced.

I added his hair. Applied sculpey dilutante to his scalp to get the added sculpey to get it to adhere. Added more dilutante to shape it with a clay shaper and then added texture with an old toothbrush using a dragging motion and a metal wax sculpting tool. Finished the hair off with a gentle coat of dilutante applied with a paint brush to remove putty that had "pilled" from the toothbrush being pressed in and dragged.

I still need to sand and scrape his face a bit (e.g. there is ridge on the right cheek that needs to be dealt with). Also, his neck is still a bit narrow and that will be filled out next.

His ears are still just roughed in - next step to drill them out with a dremel and add interior details.

For sculpting the bust proper, I will be switching to MS.

By George, I think you've got it!
IMHO, structurally, you've gotten yourself about as close as you can get. It's amazing what a couple of small tweaks will do to the overall appearance. I also think the addition of hair has, visually, stolen some volume from the jaw... to your advantage of course.

Not having done any meaningful sculpting myself, I don’t really feel equipped to comment. But if you can accept the views of an unqualified party, I think that Papineau’s right eyebrow could do with being raised slightly. In the original photo it’s certainly arched in a slightly quizzical way.

This in no way detracts from what is a superb piece of work and a hugely educational SBS.

Jeff. - you could well be right. I am not sure I will move on it though as there comes a time where one has to pass on making minor changes. The correction can cause more damage than it solves, particularly as in my experience, cooking and recooking can lead to loss of definition and some cracking risk. If I put him back in the oven again i will see what i can do. Thanks for pointing it out and the kind words.

Undercoated. The "tooth" from the spray paint shows more than it will when the colour is applied.

    Bravo Colin
The uniform may give you more fits than the head. Particularly the shirt collar and tie.
    But that's just me ;)

    Well done

Thanks and thanks for your honest comments. His face is still a bit long but too late to fix that. He's closer than he would have been without your assist. ;)

Here's Papineau done and undercoated. I still need to do a few minor things including: adding his Marguerite regimental collar dogs; adding his Major's crowns to his epaulettes; his PPCLI shoulder titles; his divisional patches; texturing his buttons; and trimming the bottom of the bust after I remove the dowel I sculpted him on.

I'm quite happy with where this ended up. I did everything below his chin in a day and a bit.

OK OK, I take back what I said about the uniform giving you fits... I can't believe how fast you pulled this off!!!!!!!!
Everything about the torso is very crisp clean and smooth. Your edges are ultra-sharpe and absolutely killed the shirt collar and tie area.
Good luck with the rest of the details

Gotta love that Magic Sculpt.Everything below his chin is MS. Applied with a wet finger, shaped with various clay shapers and metal wax sculpting tools, smoothed with a wet brush and some minor sanding. I love MS! Thanks to you and John for the kind words.

BTW - I have my own affliction....threw my lower back out putting my trousers on on Thursday. So the sculptng on this fella was done prone.
