I thought it was a comic wind up initially but it's 100% and what is amazing is that in some circles it was thought higher than or at least equal to the VC

Of the three main weekly boy's comics published by DC Thompson in the mid to late 1960's:-
I was always a bit ho hum about The Hotspur - mostly sports stories and tales about adventurous civvies. (For some reason, the local GP's surgery waiting rooms seemed to be full of back issues).
Kind of liked The Victor which mostly, but not always, focused on the two World Wars. (I seem to recall serial stories set during the Wars of the Roses - and there was one about some English guy in Medieval Japan).
My absolute favorite though was always The Hornet with it's generally wider range that served up tales of derring-do throughout the British Empire a lot more often than the other two.
My Dad had it ordered from the local newsagents for me, but I always had to wait for him to finish reading it first.
    :(....:)
Got my own back by taking three days to absorb it in detail before handing on to my wee brother.

Great stuff !! Well done, Nap, this is a cracking little post !! It was comic illustrations such as these that encouraged me to focus on
some sort of art as a profession (although I was more of an 'Eagle' man following the adventures of Dan Dare, Digby, and the scary
Mekon - plus those very English 'cut-away' drawings of high tech jet fighters, Public Water Pumping stations and other similar
    'wholesome' subjects).

Funny, born in 1972,I was brought up on Commando Comics - but I really do not recall this one.

Great stuff, I really enjoyed this! (y)
