    Hi guys

Here are the first pics of my latest figure, the superb Highlander by Pilipili.

As my wife is a big fan of the TV series Outlander, I chose to represent a variant of the Fraser tartan that was created for the show. I’ve literally just finished painting the basic tartan pattern, and now the task of detailing the tartan is about to begin.

I can’t recall who I purchased this kit from, but the previous owner added a beard which I think makes the Highlander more rugged and battle scared.

As always I welcome constructive criticism and feedback.

Great start Tony-looking forward to seeing how you tackle the tartan and picking up any tips as it’s something I never seem to get quite right.

Great start; like the tartan so far. Started this one many years ago trying to do the same as you with the beard, but so much clean up, filling, and resculpt to do that I gave up on him and back on the shelf he went. Don't leave the dog out.

Hi guys, thanks so much for your encouragement and feedback.

I’ve been painting fine details into the tartan every night this week. It’s exhausting and I’ve worked in shifts to stop my eyes getting tired. I’ve also been off caffeine as it sometimes causes my hands to shake. There’s no room for tired eyes or shaky hands when attempting to paint tartan.
I’m seeing tartan in my dreams now.

The final step is to bring out the rough texture of the wool by a series of oil paint washes and very light dry-brushing. Prior to priming I covered the surface of the tartan with two coats of Josonja texture paste to enhance the texture of the piece.

At some point with tartan you just have to stop painting and move on. As you can see, I’ve now base coated the shield and legs, but there’s still a long way to go.

And yes, the dog is going to join him on a custom scenic base.

Like others, I too have this one stashed somewhere and have been ignoring it for many years. Seeing your progress on this has really peaked my interest in revisiting my copy. I love your skillful rendition of the tartan colour, but the best part for me is the texture you've managed to create within that pattern as well. Just brilliant. Looking forward to more progress pictures Tony.

Great work. Texture paste does add to the wool effect. I wish I had thought of that prior to completing my version last year. It is a good sculpt but I had some fit issues that took awhile for me to fix. End result was worth it. That is a complex tartan you have done. Looking forward to seeing more progress photos and the finished figure.

Thanks again for your comments and likes. Progress has been slow but the elements are starting to come together.

The border collie is painted and now waiting for me to complete the groundwork.

That’s my next priority. I’m going all out to make this scene look realistically Scottish. Any suggestions?
