WIP Napoleonic Bavarian Chevaulegers.

I thought I’d have a crack at this recent purchase from Bonaparte Models, their Bavarian Chevauleger bust from the Napoleonic era. It is a super figure and you certainly get a hefty chunk of resin for your money. The detail is really good on both the horse and rider but there is quite a bit of clean up needed, some of which is quite fiddly. The dynamic of the pose really appealed together with the fact that the subject matter was not the normal Napoleonic fare.

I’ve made a start on both horse and rider and I’m going to keep them separate throughout the painting stage. There is a small resin mounting pin cast on the rider where it joins the horse. I’ve drilled this and added a small length of metal rod to hopefully provide a more stable/solid join when the two parts eventually come together. The horse body colour and mane have been given a coat of oils over an acrylic base coat and I’ve stated on the shading/highlighting. I’ve also made a start on the rider’s face. Oils are still wet at present. There is some great detail around the horses muzzle in the shape of some pores. I’m really tempted to try and add some hair around this area but not sure if it will end up looking a bit gimmicky.

Thanks Mike. I don’t know if it’s the inclusion of the horse that adds that little bit or the dynamic pose but it certainly grabs your attention.

One of Bonapartes better looking figures I think, and a great job on the painting. Will definitely keep an eye on this one as it might make its way into the cabinet ( after I've finished some of my others). Keep up the good work............dom

    Incoming… spanner in the works…

I’ll say straightaway that I know very little about horses but this nag looks very snub-nosed to me and not the elegant beast I’d expect to see. Perhaps someone with proper knowledge of horses could comment on this to prove me wrong.

Whatever, it’s a lovely combo which I’ll follow with interest.

Hi Nap. Not made a definite decision on regiment yet but was thinking of the black with red piping, is it 1st ,4th or 6th? I have the Osprey book Napoleons German allies covering the Bavarian army and have been looking on the internet. I just wondered if I went with the poppy red and the large red area of the schabraque it might be too much.

Hi Jeff, thanks for looking in. I can see what you mean , the horse is certainly a very heavy muscular looking beast but I don’t know if it’s a trick of perception due to the size of the piece. Like you I’m no expert, I just liked the overall look of the piece.

Nap, I’ve seen these pics in my internet searching but thanks for putting them on. The Osprey book shows a rear view of an officer of 1st Chevaulegers “Kronprinz” 1809 with black collar but red piping on the turn backs which seem to be quite wide bands as opposed to the thin piping which is cast on the figure coat tails. It seems from the book that there were name and number/uniform colour changes for most of the regiments over the Revolutionary/Napoleonic period so its a little confusing.

A little bit more progress on this. On the horse I’ve gone over the harnessing in oils and the red portion of the schabraque. I’ve blocked in the white border and blue diamonds in enamels. On the rider I’ve blocked in the main tunic colour and the main colour for the Raupenhelm helmet. The tunic green changed in 1809 from a light green to darker green. The base coat green as it stands would probably approximate to the pre 1809 colour. Another decision to make.
