    Hello Pfer's,

Just posting a little project I recently started of an approx 1/6th scale bust based on an illustration I believe to be from an Osprey books Zulu war reference.

It started with me trying out a larger size head sculpt roughly around the size of barbie dolls (not mine) and I'm thinking this would be around the 1/6th scale? I used a thicker course of armature wire with some Das as a filler and then added the sculpey polymer clay over the top. I've really been enjoying using this clay knowing I'm not racing against the clock to try and and it completed before it sets.

After I was reasonably happy with it I then decided I'd make a bust and thought the Natal officer was a good start. Not to complicated and I was really kooking forward to making a nicely shaped foriegn service helmet, hopefully it'll all work out.

So this is where I'm at, the light green pattern is made of the same mix of milliput and Greenstuff I used for the 'Les Grumbler' sculpt I recently posted.

    Cheers
    Chris[IMG][IMG][IMG]

    Chris,
this is a superb start, like what your doing. Not too many figures made with the blue patrol jacket.

    Hi Bob,

Thank you, agree about there not being many, usually it's the red when it comes to the Zulu conflict.

    Cheers
    Chris.

    Hi Nap,

Thanks for the comments and questions,

With the lace pattern I used the mix of milliput and Greenstuff. Basically rolled it very thin with my fingers and stretched it out a little. Can be fiddly on occasion and a little hit and miss but you get into the swing of thing's. Used toothpicks and silicone brush tool as well as finger to smooth and shape it.

The reason for the differing colours of grey is I have been using black and white sculpey and have been mixing it together to give me a grey colour to work with, that's it. So sometimes more black than white and sometimes more white than black.

    Regards
    Chris.

    Hi Chris.
Superb job me think.I know nothing about Zulu war apart from the films.Im always envious and admire what sculptors can create.
    Good work indeed.

    Hi Richard,

Thank you so much for your comment, I wouldn't consider myself a 'sculptor' though. That sounds like someone whose accomplished in this field. The zulu films are a great start and now with the internet there's plenty of info for enthusiasts.

    Kind Regards
    Chris.

    Hi Chris,
Nice to see you pushing the putty about again mate.(y) I would change the snake belt buckle and not try to sculpt it as it looks a bit flat. I would make it from a suitable gauge of wire, this will give you a much better definition in this scale for the detail and you can get the loops in also for the snake. It's much easier than trying to sculpt it.

Following with interest and agree there are so many possibilities for getting away from the scarlet tunic. Keep up the good work mate.
    cheers

    Hi Richie,
Nice to hear from you, thought you'd be sniffing around upon reading Zulu on the post ;). Thanks for the tips on the belt, I'll post a better pic of the snake buckle, but you're probably right I'll have a look around for some wire or something suitable and look at some more detail.

    Cheers
    Chris.

    Hi Chris,
Don't forget to add the loops otherwise the snake looks like it is floating, much better by the way.
    cheers

Some progress to my 1/6th Natal Native officer. Helmet will need some more shaping and detail added, but hopefully not too far from finished.
