Okay, today I start with the second Cossack Caricature, my friend Jan from Belgium sculpted for me, an older Cossack winking.

He is not a Caucasian Cossack with the famous Tcherkesska but an ordinary Steppe Cossack from the times 1917 - 1916

I have decided to paint him as a member of the 4th Don Coosack Regiment...:

His rank will be "Vakhtmistr" (Sergeant-Major). Something like that I do not have in my collection yet.

This means: Resculpting and chganging some parts!

First of all I made the peak of his cap anew, that I have lost while unpacking the parcel from Belgium. Fot that I used sheet.
(The peak must a bit smaller as in Germany.)

Next part was grinding away the piling round the cap and make a storm belt in front of the cap from Gold Paper.

And at least the most complicated part - a new cockade!

In the Imperial Russian Army three different models of cockades were worn as to see in the next picture:

There was a model for enlisted men (left), a model for NCO's I (center) and officers wore an own Variation (right)...:

Our friend is Vakhtmistr - NCO - and must habe the Center model!

    I made this from "Milliput".

He even gets the oversized "pogony" (shoulder board) with the wide tresses of an Vakhtmistr. I made them from sheet, Gold Paper - and the Buttons were needle heads.

Well, my resculpted Cossack now looks like this...:

Today I set the saw and then kneaded a bit!

The "Furashka" (so were those caps called) of our hero looks a bit stiff - good for a railway station chairman but too "licked" for a Cossack!

So I took the back of the "Furashka" anay with the microsaw and sculpted it with "Milliput" after this template ...

    ...anew.

In doing so, I have paid much attention to the "bump" at the top of the cap, where the back of the head is visible ...:

Before I will work on with sandpaper, the "Milliput" may first cure a few days!

After all, it's time to go to Ingolstadt ("Duke of Bavaria") - and next Monday we'll continue here...

    Hi Nap!

The buttons of the old shoulder pieces I have sanded off, but the shoulder pieces themselves left behind.

They represent the loops with which the new shoulder pieces are attached to the uniform...:

And thanks for your kind wishes concerning the "Duke"!
I think, I will spent a few interesting days with Markus and other friends...

    Cheers

Today I did not paint, but occupied myself with the presentation of the two caricature busts.

My "booty" from the "Duke of Bavaria" are these pedestal "twins", which I got at the "Pegaso" stand ...:

Our friends are now "anchored" with two-component glue. They give a beautiful couple ...:

A solution had to be found for the fact that the upper bodies of the two are of different sizes
If, for example, the busts are placed on shoulder height, this is particularly emphasized!

The solution was that I put the two on equal height of their eyes, which conceals the difference a little ...:

The sticks, with which the two are stuck in the wooden bases, I painted - as the bases themselves - matt black, so the two boys appear to "float visually" in the air!

As far as good - time to tell you my further ideas for the later presentation ...:

The two Cossacks were sculpted together, came from the same "creator" and made the journey together - they also will stay together!

I ordered for the price of 7 Euros this small wooden box (basic size 25 x 12 cm, depth 7.5 cm) ...:

The inside built-in compartments will I remove and the thing from outside and from inside matt black lacquer.

The cover comes off - instead, a "golden" picture frame is set before, which I at the price of 6 Euros just make the right measure ...:

Into this box are the two busts will come - and then it is hanged on the wall!

The figures will be a little farther apart than in the pictures above - and in between I will stick something to the back wall, explaining the thing on the one hand, and establishing a temporal relationship with the two Cossacks on the other:

What is more obvious than to take a caricature that shows two swooping Cossacks in the uniforms between 1910 and 1916, which I am painting?

I own this - unfortunately very bad - copy of a caricature, which appeared in the first war 1914 as a German propaganda poster to "explain" the German population the - supposedly! - derotated state of the Russian army and especially the Cossacks...:

"No problem, find the original on the WWW and print it out!", I thought.

But unfortunately sits on this - in the original colored - Picture a publishing house (how do they actually come to it?), which only raises it for a - hefty - fee and exclusively for editorial purposes ...:

When I tell them what I want the picture for, they laugh at me!

    There is another possibility:

This and other propaganda posters appeared during the First World War in book form - under the today somewhat perverse-looking title: "War album of the Funny Leaves".

The years 1914 and 1915 of this book can be bought antiquarian!

Costs at "Amazon" times just slack 225 euros - and for the book in bad condition are at other antique books at least 95 euros due - a bit steeply only for this one picture!

I have to create another idea: to search for a vodka label from the time of the Czar, which has a Cossack reference.

The best thing I have found is this label of the brand "Hetman" vodka, on which a Kosak just "one" approved ...:

    Unfortunately,

"Hetman" is Ukrainian, the vodka also - and my busts are a Russian and a Caucasian. So do not fit one hundred percent!

The Russian equivalent of the Ukrainian "Hetman" is "Ataman" and - who would have thought - there is also a Russian vodka called "Ataman"!

Only - on the label is unfortunately a heroic looking Napoleonide pictured - this doesn't work!

But by a pure coincidence, I have now come across a Figurefriend-Austria-Connection to a better black-and-white copy - that saves me and my original idea!

Maybe I'll color the copy with crayons Carefully by hand.

Or among you is a good photoshopper, who makes it colored like the original!

    If yes, please report !!!

    So much for today.

Today I got on - but I did not get any farther. Why?

Look at the pictures of the cap with which I had finished last week ...:

And then have a look at an original Don Cossack-"Furashka"...:

    What can we see?

The blue I painted is much too bright!

In addition, the cap contains some mistakes as the setting of light and shade and the painting could be cleaner overall.

I've forgotten the red piping around the top of the hat, and the cockade can also be better!

    Said and done!

Now the blue match to the template, the red piping is there, light and shadow are better set, the cockade is painted more clean - and the peak has got a nice "hard" reflex zone, as lacquer peaks show.

    Decide please:
Did I move on or don't get any further?

Our friend shows only one eye and with that I have just given special care!

The boy will get bright eyes and a much lighter skin than his Caucasian colleague.

In the eye are the following Colors:
Regarding the "white" in the eye, I have already presented it somewhat "bloodshed", which also clearly less than in the other caricature.

    What do we say?

"The most important thing about a figure is the face, and the most important thing on the face is the eyes!"

And the most important thing about the eyes - are the small white reflex points! Before, an iris is only a color patch. Only through the reflex point does an eye begin to "live".

For me every time a little "magic moment" ...:
Then I have with these colors ...

    ... underpainted the skin ...:

Usually for me on this day is always "Car Friday". We go somewhere with the oldtimer and have a fine day!
But today?Ice cold wind (regular glove weather!), one shiver after another and temperatures just over 10 degrees - NO!

    Best painting weather!

Hairy affair today - I've tried these colors ...
... and, first of all, eyebrows, headhairs and the bulging muostache.
The color combination I used for is far enough from the one I took for the Caucasian Cossack cartoon so that the "gray" does not look the same in both figures.
Then it would have been the turn of the beard shadow, but I had the idea of giving our friend plenty of bearded stools instead, as if he had not shaved for at least three or five days!
But how to do?Paint the individual hair with a brush? This has already gone wrong with the fighting Cossack in February ...:
I've been thinking back and forth until I suddenly remember an old article by Karsten Pöpping, who once described how he portrays breast-hair on busts.
    Thought - done!
I took a small corner sponge from a coarse kitchen sponge and tied it into a pair of tweezers. Then I dipped the sponge piece into a very dilute "German Gray" color, the whole stripped on a paper towel, until hardly color was still on it (like dry painting!) And then with the sponge slightly wiping on the chin of the Cossack spotted.
The resulting effect is great - and you can control it as you like it!
Okay - when I finished, my little Cossack looked splendidly unshaven and stiff-bearded ...:
