Now for all you top painters out there I need some help. I like oils due to the blending quality but I hate the drying time! Acrylics dry too fast for me so I'm kind of stuck.

I would prefer to paint in oils TBH but can anyone give me some handy advice about getting a compromise on drying time as I do not want this to take so long that dust starts to get attracted to long term wet areas!

There are a few methods to speed up the drying time of oils David. The main one I use is my hot box; I have a wooden box with a 40W bulb fitted inside. I pop my figure in there overnight and everything is usually dry for the next days painting. It has the added advantage of providing some protection from dust and damage as it dries.

Alternatively you can use an alkyd medium like Liquin which reduces the drying time of most oils to less than a day. You can also use alkyd paints which already have the medium premixed into them but they tend to have a lower pigment load and are also more transparent than normal oils - they are fantastic for glazing though ;)

A good compromise would be to swap out your Titanium White for an alkyd version. As most mixtures will contain white to some degree, you will effectively reduce the drying time by introducing the alkyd medium into the mix by stealth ;)

Guys, I have primed this now having waited about a month for it to be totally dry!

Can anyone help with colours for this figure in respect of acrylics? Some of the reference pics look blue/green, but others look brown/rust??

I'm ok painting but not got a great eye for actual colour mixes!

    Thanks

You could use washes of each and see what works best

For such a cool project I would recommend going to the original source for Alien. You should get your hands on a book about H.R. Giger with copies of the original artwork.
Maybe in a public library or buy one at the bookstore or online.
I am a huge fan of the guy.
As for colours, it is such a personnal choice but in any case, you should not go with pure greys since it will look fake without any 'life'.. add some brown here, some deep dark blue there, etc.

    Cheers

Hi mate....good to see you back :)....Vallejo Air do some fantasy sets I think....another route you can take is to use inks...which can be applied by brush or AB :sneaky:
Another useful trick is to mix either of the above with some 'Klear'....again by brush or AB (y)
Let us know what you decide...and..of course...keep us updated on progress :D

    Regards

If you decide to build a hot box for this , given the size of the thing you could probably move in and live in it after you have finished! Great progress so far.

    Cheers, Bob
