I assumed it would be something akin to that, I like the idea of warm shadow to light grey.
That's going to be a nice way to control the tones.

The painting of the uniform is looking really good.
However, the finish you've achieved on the face keeps pulling my eyes in that direction.

    Cheers,

Those NMM buttons have really come out well and reflect the painterly style that you have gone for in this piece.
    Very nicely done.

Thanks gents. Nap I did the buttons using the gold NMM mixes found here. http://www.ehow.com/how_8181880_mix-colors-metals-oil-paint.html

Nap - I undercoated the buttons in yellow ochre oil first and let them dry thouroughly. Painted the undersides in dark black/umber mix and upper surfaces in the highlight mix pervthe article. Let it dry. The high lighlights of Naples Yellow and titanium white were applied mixed with liquin to get good opacity. All applied in a swirling motion.

Here he is with most of the cartridge pouch belt done. Still needs some highlighting etc. Starting the barrel sash. Still need to paint the flounders under his arm and the chair back plus lots of touch ups but am getting into the home stretch.

The pelisse fur should be medium grey rather than white so I have overdone the highlighting. I will pull it back to grey with some glazes once the oil is dry enough.

This really is looking the part. Very nicely painted and a superb piece of eye candy. Seeing this in the flesh is worth the ticket price and the travelling to the show in September.

Mostly done. Just need to do the chair, flounders and tassels, touch ups - lace highlights, cartridge belts chains, zig zags on barrels of sash etc. Still playing with buttons...they have just been washed dark and need repainting. His hair needs a dark wash and highlights.

This has been an epic build Colin, and has become a masterpiece in my opinion.

I hope your efforts are rewarded with the correct
recognition around the show circuit you participate in.

I am so taken with this, I dread to think what you have
'up your sleeve' to follow on with.
I know you try to better each previous piece.

    Fantastic stuff.

Thanks a lot Paul. Pretty nice words to read. My son wants a Roman as a birthday gift so perhaps Augustus next.
