Here's my mostly complete sculpt of Lt. Paulee. Inspired by the attached painting. For background see my prior thread on sculpting him. This may be one of the strangest looking busts you will ever see due to the addition of the chair back. Not a direct copy of the portrait but inspired by it.

I still need to add his barrel sash cord and the eagle ,crown and chains to his cartridge belt. Then painting starts. A wee bit of filling at the cuff and shoulder too. Just noted back of the left arm is a little rough too.

My 22 year old says his arm is too long. Feck, he's right. So off it comes. Stay tuned.

I would move chair closer to his body, if at all practical - it will tighten the composition. If you re- working the arm, may be to put the spindle of the chair where the elbow bends, so his arm rests on chair and hand with gloves hangs round and downwards.

    Colin,

The amount of detail in this is amazing , agree with the comments from Gaudin about the chair seems too out in the open ...as for the arm ...nice call that young man!...kids huh who needs them..LOL !

Must admit I like the use of the chair wasn't sure it would work ..but it does indeed ..very clever mate

    Looking forward to seeing more

    Best wishes

    Wow!!!!
Another winner. I probably would have missed the arm issue if you didn't point it out. I love the idea of the chair involved in the bust, very cool.

Once the arm is sorted I can't wait to see some colour on this bad boy.

    Good luck in Chicago

Well done colin and good call by your son, the detail looks great and when you have sorted the arm out it will look even better. I like the chair it sets it off and gives you something more to look at, not just an arm going across the chest.

Hope you have a good Chicago it's a great show, and looking forward to seeing this one painted.

    Cheers

    Hi Colin.

-Yes please revise arm lenght and If you will move chair closer, change back -arch to opposite direction, or count back-arch direction which will reminds sit place in down, this will definetly need some place in down and will cause upper back- arch away from body..( I hope I could explain matter(n) )

About right hand, if you let it down little, figure will have bit relaxed mood.

    This will be great

I agree that there is something unnatural about the arm and chair. I was working my imagination to try and get it to "work." It doesn't. The hand with the glove sucks too.

I think I need to redo the whole thing. I am limited by several things including the figure's posture ( he is leaning back a bit); the rear of the pelisse (as it is laced I can't change the drapery without massive work); and the chest/shoulder.

But I can certainly do better. As usual I was rushing toward an artificial deadline as I wanted to take him south tomorrow. Modelling under pressure always a bad idea when also resodding the property, painting, doing various chores, electrical and pkumbing work.

Thanks for the input....very valuable :)

    Hi Colin,
Inclined to agree with the other chaps, tinkering the arm and chair will sort it out nicely, beautiful work Colin.

I decided to leave the arm essentially alone. But I did shorten it removing material from the wrist and shoulder. I am happy with the pose now. Arm is resting on chair back; he's leaning slightly back as he sits on the invisible seat. The alignment is OK, at least in my mind. If I imagine his bum and chair seat everything lines up and he is balanced. Thanks for the input.

He is ready for paint now. Still need to add the Legion of Honour medal and sash cords but they can come anytime.

Threw some paint on him. First time using Life Colour. I like it. This is the undercoat and one shade of flesh. Looks like this guy is going to have acrylic on him.
