hello all. I'm in need of a fairly detailed picture of the heraldry that would have appeared on the actual drum for a british drummer during the battle at albuera. I'm painting the mitches military miniatures drummer sculpted by maurice corry and I cannot find any adequate pictures as this era is completely out of my realm. Any help with this matter would be greatly appreciated! This is the figure in question. The pic is not quite detailed enough for me to replicate.

    Hi Dan,

is this detailed enough? The Albhuera battle honour wouldn't be on the drum at the actual battle!!

I believe that pattern is too early! Its circa 1770-80.
The later Drum was gold with red and white chevron's. The regimental insignia is encased by the red heart symbol that is encased by rose bushes. I just did one in 54MM posted here http://www.planetfigure.com/threads/drummer-boy-57th-regt-of-foot-1811.73331/ . I'll see if I can pull up the reference pics for you Dan.

Mick Do you have any pic's of the correct Drum pattern?

thanks guys. this helps. anybody got a rear view of this figure? I also have the book on british napoleonic uniforms written by Franklin I believe but nowhere do I see the uniform that is depicted in the link above. Close but not quite right. Any more help from you napoleonic experts would be very welcomed here. I need to know what this dude would have looked like during the Albhuera battles. The tunic shown in the book shows the tunic for the 57th regt of foot totally different. black, red and white piping similar to Mike Stevens rendition but the timeline of the pic in the book is a few years earlier than Albhuera. Is the painting in Tommi's review above accurate? HELP!!!!:wtf:

    Hi Dan.
Sorry I dont have a image of a Drum for the 57th . Can you be a bit more specific as to the problem you have with the tunic. The Franklin book you have is it C E Franklin British Napoleonic Uniforms. Short of looking at an actual tunic of a Drummer of the 57th dated 1811 I think in MHO Franklin is very good. Let us know what the problems are.

Yes Mick that is the book. It shows the 57th regt of foot (west middlesex) drummer tunic pic a bit earlier than I am looking to depict. the basic boxart shows the tunics like this http://www.planetfigure.com/threads/die-hard-drummers-mitches-military-models.41777/
The drawing in the book shows it to be different but it is dated a couple of years before Albuera. My question is what tunic pattern do i follow? The boxart looks to be yellow with white and some red facings. The pic in Franklins book shows yellow but the piping in red, black and white. similar to mike stevens wonderful boxart that appears in the link he posted above. I'm not knowledgeable regarding this era, yet I am trying to be accurate. This is what I am trying to figure out. The drum pattern is not in question anymore. Plenty of good people here have given me really good references on that. So it's just the tunic that is in question for me. Thank you.

    Hi Dan,
Im sure people are watching this and will be all over me like a rash if Im wrong. My opinion is that the box art for your kit is taken from the painting by Lady Butler I'll give her , her due she did wave a good paint brush but her pictures did miss out a little on accuracy . These figures depict a scene from the Battle of Albuera 16th May 1811 So the picture in the plate dated Circa 1810 would be a correct time line. It was not until 1812 that the Tunic colour changed from Yellow to Red.The examples of lace shown at the bottom of the page are dated between 1793 -1815 so they are correct for 1811.
The only thing Im not sure about, on the figure the dummy pocket/lace runs parallel to the turn back. Franklin shows it at right ankles. However Light Co Tunics show it parallel Centre and Grenadier Co show right angle. So I am unable to answer this little puzzle. If you stick with Franklin you wont go far wrong.
If you can give it a day or two to see if anyone else wants to put in ten peneth, If not Id go with it.
    Hope this Helps

thanks again Mick. I think the client based his knowledge of the figure from that painting so I will probably stick with that, however like you I will wait to see who else chimes in here.

    Dan
Give the client both options. L Butler's version would be better for you, not having to do the lace work . But it wont be correct??
