I was wondering if members have information on the various uniforms worn by the Americans during the American War of Independence. I understand one of the New Hampshire regiments wore sky blue coats with red facings, a New York regiment wore grey coats with green facings, and some Virginian regiments had brown coats with red facings.

Perhaps, with the abundant knowledge on this forum, it is possible to produce a list of the uniforms worn by the various American units.

Any information would be gratefully received received.

    Cheers
    Chris

Thank you Mike. I have Mollo's book, and it is good. However, does it cover all regiments?

Yes, I am serious or I wouldn't have started the thread, and I am wondering if it is possible to compile a list of all regiments and their uniforms? Probably not possible, as some would not be recorded, but given the knowledge of members we might be able to compile as comprehensive a list as possible.

Again, many thanks for your reply.

    Cheers

Can't personally vouch for any of them, Chris. AWI is not my period of interest. Just did a word search on "American War of Independence uniforms, books" on Google and they came up.

    All the best,
    Dan

One book I have on the topic is Don Troiani's "Soldiers of the American Revolution". Lots of pictures of equipment and colour details. Not sure if it's still available but check Amazon.

    Hi Chris,

    I have the following book:-
"Uniforms of the 1775 - 1783 American, British, French and German Armies of the War of the American Revolution" by Lt. Charles M Lefferts.
It contains over 70 pages of descriptions of dress worn by deserters from the American Army, as taken from the contemporary press.
The third photo is of a sample of a couple of these pages.
Let me know if you think such information might be useful.

    Andrew,

That is an excellent source. Clearly, there is plenty of evidence out there. Just a matter of knowing about it.

    Many thanks for your contribution.
