    Hi all,

I did this Marine figure from Young Miniatures a while ago, but was not happy with the face, so I decided to re-do it, which is a first for me.

When I originally posted it, I was given tips about getting rid of the eyeliner look around the eyes, and try an get more contrast into the flesh tones, so hopefully I have gone a step closer to achieving that.

So, I was just looking for some opinions on it now, and any other tips or info on what else I have to look out for.

Its painted in acrylics which I also wanted to get better at blending flesh tones, and I think I am getting more comfortable with doing that now.

I know this is far from perfect, and I still have a long way to go, but I am happy that it looks like an improvement and I am hopefully heading in the right direction.

Anyway, here are some before and after pics.

Hey Jeff, I don't have an expert opinion but after looks much more natural to me. Especially around the eyes.

Wow, what a huge improvement, well done, you could try a smidge of red on the cheeks and at the tip of the nose to give a feeling of wramth. I like the weathering on the weapon

Definitely an improvement! Some transitions between the different shades of the skin look a bit harsh but might be the pictures. What I would still work on is the five-o-clock shadow around the lips. Between edge of the upper lip and the stubble of the moustache should be a line of light skintone.

These aspects are minor and I like your second result a lot.

    Hi Jeff

    Massive improvement mate. Massive.

Still more work to done on the transition between highlight and shadow tones to remove hard edges and have nice soft edges.

I think the red colour at the tip of the nose is a bit OTT. I'd blend it back into your flesh base and put a light light colour on the top of the top of the nose.

Thanks a lot for the feedback Martin!

Yes, I have to work more on the mid tones and transitions, and your tip on the bit under the mustache is spot on, I did not notice until you posted that example.

    Thanks again!

Thanks a lot for the feedback Tony!

Yes mate, as you and Martin advise, I will have to work on my mid tones and transitions, that will be my next priority.

...and yes, the tip of the nose looks very prominent in the pics, it doesnt look anything as stark in person, but I will try and blend it back in with some flesh.

Thanks again for the feedback Tony, very much appreciated!

    Hi all,

I did what Martin and Tony suggested, and fleshed out the area just under the mustache, and toned the red nose tip down a bit with some flesh.

I think this looks much better now, although, I think I will darken the flesh above the lip a little bit looking at the photo,.. thanks again for the tips fella's!

Just a quick pic from my Iphone.

Really well done(y)! IMHO the fleshtone you chose above the upper lip looks right. The problem might be the deep five o clock shadow that has a very harsh transition - so it looks more like a kind of moustache. Five o clock shadows can be represented by mixing black, blueish and greenish shades into the flesh color. A five o clock shadow has "highlights" (lighter areas) and shadows as well. Transitions to the flesh areas can be made by "stubbling" the paint on the flesh tone - not overpainting the whole area.
I hope you get what I mean - I am not a native speaker. Good luck with your project - it looks better and better!
    Cheers, Martin

    Thanks a lot Martin!

The deep five oclock shadow, is actually a beard that is sculpted onto the figure, that is why it looks as though it has a harsh tranistion, but thanks for the info on doing the five oclock shadow.I had no problem with them when I painted in oils, but acrylics is a different ball game.

    Thanks again,
    Jeff.

Jeff, you keep getting better with every shot, keep er going. If that is a beard I'd add some highlights, it's a bit dark from what I see. Under the cheeks I would probably add a bit more transition and a bit of redish tones. Martin's example would be a good reference among others. Love the camo patterns and body work, Spot On!

    Cheers, Ski.
