Did the 24th ever wear the helmet badges during the Zulu war?

I have an older figure made by New Hope sculpted from this illustration taken from the Osprey Men at Arms series # 107 of British Military Equipment.

Thanks Nap! I was thinking about it but he may be in the middle of one of his many projects. I'm in no hurry so I give it a few days. If he doesn't reply I shoot him a PM for sure.

    Chuck,
I have been looking at a lot of Zulu War reference recently and none of the good illustrations or photos show the 24th wearing helmet badges on campaign (as far as I remember). Also in the field they dyed the helmet covers with tea and coffee, so they wouldn't be bright white but a buff colour.
The Osprey book 'British Forces In Zululand' has some of the best illustrations in I think - the cover shows a good one.

    Hi Chuck,
I would go with Matt, there were actual shako plates recovered from the Isandlwana battlefield and are in the RRW museum www.royalwelsh.org.uk but whether these were worn in battle on the foreign service helmet, who really knows. I have looked at numerous photo's and illustrations from this period and the convention seems to be no badge and stained/pipe clayed helmets.
If the badge is fitted and you don't want to remove it then would be OK, just leave as is.
    cheers

    Thanks Mat and Richie,

I think that I will remove it. If I screw it up too bad, I can always make a epoxy putty pugaree to cover it up and turn him into the Post Officer Rifles figure that I'm eventually planning to make. ;)

    Regards,
    Chuck

    Hi Chuck.

I have just looked at Michael BARTORP's Book The Zulu War a Pictorial History.
On page 72 There is a photograph of the B Company 24th taken at the end of the war and it shows a few helmets without plates.
On Page 85 Photograph of the 99th crossing the Tugela They have plates
On page 95 photograph of 91st Highlanders without plates.
and just to confuse the issue even more on pages 122, and 149, are photographs of the 2/21st both with and without plates.

So I would do what looks good and how you would like it to look.

So not a lot of help sorry.
    Mick.

Quite the contrary Mick, now I have the option of leaving it on. That said, I believe for the 24th it's much more common to leave it off.

    Thanks,
    Chuck
