    1 001.jpg Palace WIP 002.jpg 1 007.jpg 1 004.jpg 1 005.jpg 1 006.jpg

some rework and highs on the plate (nice work from Gaudin's sculpting on the double headed eagle) 1 003.jpg

Then more on the medals ..ye hah!!!! 1 002.jpg

Thats the actual bust virtually finished , need to tidy up a few things , then onto the weapon he holds with a rather naughty looking baynot !!!
    Chronos_65.jpg
A lots of fairly delicate work , I reworked the moustache to be more like the picture and have slightly changed the medal ribbons a tadge but am fairly happy with the result!!!

Thanks for looking in ...off to start on the weapon...will post WIP if I can!!!

Hi Nap. I normally try to not comment on anything outside my own era of interest (Napoleonic) but occasionally feel the need to add my two penn’orth. So, here goes…

Not knocking your admirable efforts in any way but it does seem to me that the model’s bearskin is perched precariously on his head. I think it would look far more convincing if it came at least half-way down his forehead, as in the illustration you’ve supplied. (The side views, in particular, make it look as though the slightest puff of wind would dislodge it.)

A bit too late to do anything about it, I know.

    Hi Jeff ,

Thanks for your two penny's worth , the bearskin does look high , like in the picture I feel which is what the sculptor Gaudin workd from as well as references as in my review , the headwear was high and no doubt precarious when worn

These soldiers were in effect the playthings of the Rusdian Tsar , brave indeed as seen in all the medals earned so hard on the battlefield

For me the challenge was the lacework and awards as well as achieving the image of these soldiers, albeit household troops...I won't be changing anything!

Why don't you move outside your own area of Napoleonic and give this a go , I would be interested seeng what you would do woth the headwear....it's available fom El Greco miniatures.

    Thanks for looking in

    Looks great.
It may be the pictures, but St George ribbons - orange needs to be more yellow/ ochre tone rather than reddish.

Bearskin should sit lower and cover more of the forehead - so some forward tilt is needed. I think casting plugs messed a little with a snug fit I had on a master. I had to trim edges with scalpel quite a bit to sink it back where it belongs.

    Hi Dimitry ,

The actual ribbons are a lot less reddish , more an orange ochre colour ...these were among the many references used, variations! Some more ochre in colour.

When fitting the bearskin I cleaned up all around the head area to fit it ..I am sure soldiers wore them slightly different apart from painting the weapon!...that's if the baynot stays on ?.or rather hopefully as it's quite delicate.

Would have been good for this comment to have been posted before it was primed as in other threads ..I could have relooked at it ...and cut the resin about easier!

    Thanks for looking in

It kind of escaped me, as I would paint the hat separately and then fit it on, I assumed every one would go same way, so it didnt occur to me to mention, sorry!

I am having a close look at medal ribbons now, are you sure you got them right? Like last on the right - 300 years of Romanov Tsardom - should be white yellow and black. etc
have a look at references I sent you

    Hi D ,

Thanks for your comments ,I have chosen different ribbons on some rather than stick to the main picture ref, the one in the right is indeed not the 300 anniversary one but I think I might now change the ribbon to it ...it will add a bit more colour to the medal display .......

    image.jpg

I used this also as a references 556_medal_sold-5.jpg

    Always appreciate your help

    Hi Guys ,

Thanks for all the comments it's what PF is about .

I have redone the 3 St George's ribbons and changed the one on the right to the 300 Romonov anniversary medal , they do look a lot better now so thanks folks .

As you can see there is no blue ribboned one as in picture can't get a reference on this ribbon colour (3rd from right in original painted picture) but would be interested if anyone cn help !

Thanks to Gaudin for sculpting this , my bearskin might be sitting a little but it's staying...my grenadier liked to be a little different and it added a bit more to his height..my reasoning !

The subject us be great to get the references on (Thanks to Dimitry and Red Tom and all others)

Off to finish the rifle now

I will post more pics when completed ..DEFINATELY before Christmas Day!

    Thanks for looking in

Huge improvement with Romanov's ribbon and St George ribbons are just right. I am pleased that monograms on shoulders held ok, they actually look very distinct.

Another little thing I noticed - the tassel on bearskin - should have red strands inside, gold on outside ( in some references. most pictures you cant see it too well, but on black and white photos center is definitely darker).

    [IMG][IMG]

I think the last picture also brings some validation to high sitting bearskin idea;)
I will be painting mine over New year, fingers crossed can do it justice.

PS. Buttons should (in theory) have an eagle on them, but it will have to be freehand, I chickened out at the time of sculpting, only now I got the skills to tackle that.

Gaudin, thanks for the photo. I take back what I said about the bearskin being too high on the forehead. No doubt, I was thinking of the way that British Guardsmen wear theirs.

No, Jeff, I think you have a point, I think mostly it will sit low, just due to sheer weight of the thing. But it also not impossible to have it higher, even if temporarily.

Don't forget there also will be some very specific regulation of some sort, of how things should be worn:) especially on Palace duties

The high bearskin is most likely due to it not being the correct size for the head. That image is a re enactor and I am pretty sure it would not have been worn like, especially if fitted correctly, it would naturally fall down or off the back of the head. The period images are most likely accurate and once taught to wear something correctly in the services you rarely change it, especially in full dress. A nice piece though and great work Kev :)

    Hi Guys,

Gaudin ....thanks for pics can I ask you do give a bit more details on the red on the tassels is it just on the flounders or on the small tassel on the top ...appreciate some sort of guidance or drawing or pics .

On the reenactors it looks like it's a small area of red the middle of the smaller tassel ...is it the same on the larger one as wel?

Buttons....eagle on them ..?....bet it's double headed...see below is that right..and it shall be done ..there are only 10 to do !

One thing more to ask ref the rifle are there brass bands on it holding it together ...and on the actual strap is it red or red leather on the back with the gold front ?

I seen the reenactors there are ribbons with blue in the design ...any suggestions based on the original picture ref

    Jeff/Gra/ZC"

Thanks for your input appreciate it ...perhaps my grenadier cap was a little small!.......this thread has brought a lot of very interesting points which I hope will help anyone else painting this

Gaudin.... You will do the bust a great credit I am sure ....looking forward to seeing it here.

Hope to get some more info on the tassels and buttons/medal ribbon!

Off to do the wooden parts of the rifle!

I am sure about small tassel, but not sure about the other, I haven't seen any proper pics yet. I think it will be same.
Buttons - I would chose closest one to the eagle on the bearskin, as they should match the uniform pattern of the particular year.

Not sure about the rifle yet

    Right Nap,

    Here are your Christmas presents:

    Both tassels have red core.

    And a rifle belt :

And - chevrons on the sleeve should be embroidered too.
