Hi to all on PF ,

If like me you are still in your childhood ;) then comics were a big part of growing up , all providing images from the likes of the Bash Street Kids to the more recent superheroes from the American publishing companies ....one of these is a guy called Anung Un Rama or more better known as Hellboy .

Our hero has many other aliases including : The Right Hand of Doom, The Beast of the Apocalypse, The World Destroyer, The Great Beast, HB, Red, Red Ape, Monkey Boy

Our subject is a mere 7' tall weighs 400 lbs or 182 kg with red skin , orange eyes and black hair , his job is a Paranormal Investigator .

Originally created by Mike Magnola he appeared first in 1993 in the San Diego Comic Con issue #2
and has been in a total of 257 comics including

The comics were adapted into a 2004 film starring Ron Perlman as Hellboy with a sequel, Hellboy 2: The Golden Army, and two straight-to-DVD animated films, the first of which, Hellboy: Sword of Storms, was released on February 6, 2007.

He is described as smelling of dry-roasted peanuts. Although a bit gruff, he shows none of the malevolence thought to be intrinsic to demons, and works with other strange creatures in the B.P.R.D. Hellboy has been dubbed as the "World's Greatest Paranormal Investigator".

The character has been featured in a sequence of comic book mini-series published by Dark Horse Comics, influenced by vintage adventure and horror fiction.

According to Mignola's commentary on the Hellboy film DVD, various aspects of the character's looks and personality were inspired by his own father, a cabinet maker who often returned home from work with tales of horrific on-the-job accidents, told in the nonchalant, unflappable manner that would eventually become characteristic of Hellboy.

    Amongst his attributes include:

    • Superhuman Strength: He is able to lift up 10 tons. The extent of Hellboy's strength is unclear, but he has, for example, torn down a large tree and hurled it at an opponent. He has also thrown opponents weighing at least four to five hundred pounds.
    • Accelerated Healing: He can be burned and damaged like any living thing, but possesses a "healing factor" (much like the Marvel Comics character Wolverine) that allows him to recover from wounds at an incredible rate. One example of this was when he once took a sword thrust through his chest. In the movies, he is depicted as being fireproof, but in the comics he can still burn; however his accelerated healing may still give off the illusion of being immune to fire. He has been savagely beaten by large monsters on several occasions and survived, often with relatively minor injuries. On one occasion, Hellboy directly charged an MG-42 machine gun and took numerous bullets to the chest before destroying it.
Hellboy's superhuman abilities would seem to stem from his demonic nature. While his specific powers and abilities have never been explicitly listed, Hellboy is much stronger and more physically durable than an ordinary human being.

Hellboy has been noted to be able to see farther than the average human, and quickly heal from fatal wounds. He also has the innate ability to comprehend ancient and magical languages.
Hellboy also seems to age differently from normal Humans. At the time that young Hellboy tried his favorite food, “pamcakes” for the first time, he was technically two years old but appeared to be far older, around age six. In 1954 he already appeared to be a full grown adult, but was in reality about ten years old. His rapid physical maturation is in contrast to his physical rate of aging, which seems to be much slower than normal. Throughout the sixty year span of his life, Hellboy seems to have ceased to age ever since reaching physical maturity.

    His weapons include:

In addition to his natural gifts, Hellboy carries a variety of items, such as holy relics, horseshoes, and a variety of grenades; these often come in handy when fighting supernatural beasts. He also typically carries a sidearm of some sort. Originally this sidearm was a gun that was given to him by the Torch of Liberty, a World War II era superhero who also trained Hellboy in marksmanship. Unfortunately this gun was lost in the ocean during "The Third Wish."
    • His most recognizable weapons are the Right Arm of Doom 12.jpg (which seems to be an unnatural addition to his anatomy) and the Samaratain 11.jpg , a powerful hand cannon. Hellboy also carries a golden cross that is attached to a chain that hangs from his belt. This cross is a symbol of his Catholic faith and upbringing.
This is indeed the subject of the latest from Pathos Miniatures ....they have called it Big Red :

Lets open the pages on this super hero:

What are we looking at from Pathos Miniatures :

    Title: Big Red

    Scale: 1/10th

    Material: Resin

Sculpted (using 3D) : Jerry Groschke.

    No of Pieces : 2

    Casting: YS Castings (Yannis)

The Review piece was received very quickly well packed against the infamous British Post Office !!!! ...it comes in a more than adequete resealable plastic bag with the pieces wrapped in bubble wrap . Big Red 019.jpg

The pieces numbered a total of 3 (you only need 2 as there is a spare cigar!!!!) ...Prep needed took a short while this included a quick tidy up of the cast on "base" along the edges and removing carefully one of the cigars ...( then if your'e like me scrambling about on your knees looking for the cigar you just dropped:eek: !!!..thankfully an extra was provided ...nice one Pathos(y) )
    Big Red 020.jpg
There is a casting line to deal with running down the middle back ..very fine and easy to sort out .

The Review piece came with the card as shown Big Red 018.jpg , box art to follow.

As you can see the bust is a one piece casting which include a "base" this is a good idea it is angled at the top edges with a further piece linking the bust to the base .....it works well I think , a small swipe of putty was needed just to tidy the edges.

Big Red 023.jpg Big Red 024.jpg Big Red 023.jpg Big Red 025.jpg Big Red 027.jpg Big Red 026.jpg Big Red 028.jpg

Working from the top Big Red has a hairstyle to die for , with a back knot tied up , almost Japanes in style , the hair is pulled back and at the sides we have some wicked sideboards , all details of the hair texture are good perhaps a little soft for some maybe but very nice all the same .
Big Red 034.jpg Big Red 029.jpg
On his forehead he has the remnants of the horns nice surface details on these ....you could always extend these to form actual horns if you so wish ...for me I will stick with the lovely sculpted version!!! Big Red 030.jpg

Big Red is like me :):) very muscular the sculpting of the neck muscles are very prominant with the voce box area being noticable ..all as in the pictures and in keeping with the character .
    Big Red 032.jpg
Working down Big Red he has his chest exposed ..a veritable mass of rippling muscle , all perfectly tones and lovingly sculpted and cast
    Big Red 033.jpg
Over his torso he wears a trenchcoat , with nice details on the collar ..again in keeping with the images often seen .

ALL area's of the bust are really beautifully smooth with undercuts on the coat collar being well done , it is slightly lifted at the back of the neck

The facial features are unmistakably the man himself good eye and ear details , jowls on his face with a small goatee type beard all well done ,in his mouth he has the forever present cigar , fit of this is perfect casting is super smooth

The cigars are well done, simple but effective ..and if like me you drop one you have a spare ..fit into the corner of the mouth is good and really seems to bring Big Red to life even more . Big Red 036.jpg .

    Final thoughts:

This is a smashing little bust ...and has the words FUN FUN all over it , simple presentation , great sculpting (as it should be using 3D) giving a nice display addition.

This is not my normal subject matter but I LOVE IT

I hope we might see more superheroes ..maybe a female........wonderwoman :love:perhaps

Great addition to the Pathos Range , which extends the variety for us bust modellers .

Have a look at the website for more nice pieces to tempt you

www.pathosminiatures.com. (this is a very recent addition so is still being fine tuned)

Nice informative review Nap, thanks for that. Nice kit also, the likeness is pretty darn good. As you have said, I hope they do a few more of the Superhero/villain line of busts as they will prove popular and be fun to paint as well
    Cheers

Nice review Kevin. A bit different from your normal military reviews but this one is right up my street as I love the comics and have got both HellBoy dvds. As I know you I must say I was stunned at the amazing likeness between yourself and Hellboy. Just a little bit of conversion work and it would look just like you. That reminds me, I've gotta get another 5 packs of milliput!! :D

Higgins objects!!! there are no superheroes but BATMAN (if you don't count Adam West).

This can hardly be described as beautiful, but you know what I mean.
    Best wishes, Gary.
