Here's the setting for the Tom Meier 1/48 FIW figs I have on the bench. This was my fist attempt at doing a significant clear water effect. I used just about everything in the playbook on the water. The vegetation is a mixed of dried plant material and Silflor. I sculpted the trees and grafted roots to them. I intend to refine the look of them before completion.

Wow, that's incredibly good. Almost doesn't need figures. A tremendous piece of modelling in its own right John.

John, I really like what you've done so far. My only thought is that the transition from trunk to branch is a bit abrupt - any way to beef it up a bit, or add branches lower down on the trunks? Notwithstanding that minor observation, the overall impact is very nice. Which of the Tom Meier jewels will be gracing this groundwork?

Very nice. Im a sucker for any base with a water effect on it. Great job

John, you know I am a fan of your groundwork mastery (I actually need to pick your brain at some point), but I agree with Don on the trees. Regarding the water, I like what you have done here, but if you want an easy water effect try the Vallejo Water Effect Transparent Water. I swear by the stuff, in fact I am using it now on one of my current figure projects. I will post pics ASAP.

Nice groundwork, John. I agree with the previous comments regarding the transition from trunk to branches.
A great tip when modelling trees it too read up on the principles of Bonsai.
The aesthetics involved in Bonsai can, when applied to modelling trees, produce very realistic results. Principles such as a smooth transition from base to apex, branches emerge from the trunk in an alternate pattern rather than opposite each other, mature trees have all smaller branches growing upward and the entire canopy taking the shape of a triangle upside down, sideways any way but always triangular, that kind of thing.
Anyway I may not have explained things very well but Bonsai aesthetics always make for great trees regardless of species....cheers.

Very nice work on this groundwork, no I Love it.
I hope you can do a SBS on such a piece of art.
Further I have to agree with the comments before me. The transition is to harsh.

Very nice John....I don't know the figures you are setting here. The groundwork would obviously work better with ancient or AWI than WWII.

Thanks all. As I said, the trees will be refined before completion. They are mostly mocked up at this point. The photos revealed a few flaws that I wasn't aware of as well.

Colin, it will be an FIW piece. I'm using three of the Tom Meier figures. An Indian and two of the Rogers' Rangers.
