Oh, no worries. I'm happy for the advice and tips. I just wanted to let you know where I was coming from. I've painted more ancients, so when it comes to more recent figures there's a lot more info available and thus a lot more you need to worry about. Ideally I want historical accuracy and good painting results... but sometimes I have to sacrifice one for the other. =)

I recently picked up the Romeo kit of a Naples Officer of the Navy Guard. He's another with real dark blue so all of your advice will be helpful on that one. It's similar colors to Colin's figures, so I'll be giving those mixes a try. One of the main reasons I share my work is for feedback and advice on how to improve, so constructive criticism is always welcome!

I haven't posted an update on this figure in quite a while... unfortunately there is a good reason for that. I was trying to wrap up this project to take to a show in the DC area back in September. It was a multi-day show and to keep the figures safe they were placed in locked display cases. Usually that would be fine, but when a drunken wedding guest at the same hotel decides to tackle the case... well, that's just something you can't really plan for. This figure took the brunt of the damage.

So I spent a lot of time repairing, fixing chips and scratches, etc. I finally managed to bring this guy back from the dead. I'd still like to do a little more with the water effects. I've got to experiment a bit, so we'll see. In the meantime here's a picture of the almost finished figure. I'll post more angles once he's completely done.

    Hi Bailey,

Glad to know that you were able to ressurect this beautiful work. It's a shame what happened.
Good luck with this work and your other injured figures.

Always sad that these things can happen but glad you fixed in! Is one of my favourite figures from Pegasso.

    great painting, very well done.

only a criticism... blu is too light. this guy wore a dark imperial blu kurtha with crimson facings. the below picture shows an original for officer but the tone should be closer. officers parade uniform of the regiment of the guard lancers.jpg

    Thanks everyone.

Ivopreda, yeah, I know the blue ended up being too light. Dark blue was a color I had a difficult time with. As I highlighted it brought the whole color up too much. I tried a new approach on the Navy Guard figure and am much happier with it. Redoing this one was too much work... but I've got the 90mm Polish Lancer from Andrea (fantastic kit) and I will get it right for that one! :)

do you ever tried to use some dark wash? frequently to optimiz the colour is enough to wash it. Try on an hidden area, you'll be surprised

    Very well rescued David.
Really nice piece that reminds me of the work from Shep Payne.
Very nice groundwork sets the whole thing off superbly.
For your next Navy Blue piece I would base the colour on Indigo, I use this because it tends toward black where Prussian Blue tends to favour a royal blue colour. Give it a try on a scrap of card to establish your light and shade.
I hope that it works for you.
All the very best of luck,
    Keith

So I've been really late in posting the finished photos of this guy. Finally sat down and took some decent photos of the lancer. I hope you all like how he turned out.

All the debate about the shade of blue aside, this is a fantastic finish. Let's just say for arguments sake, the uniform is heavily, campaign faded ;)

Great job, look forward to your next piece.
