    Hi guys,

I've just started painting my latest figure, a classic Andrea 90mm figure called The Retreat.

I started painting the face last night and did a bit more on it today ( while listening to the 1812 Overture for inspiration.

Here are the first pics. I hope you like how it's started.

Face looks great so far Tony, just like a very cold face should look. Like the badge on the front of his shako. Will watch this with interest as its a super figure.

He's looking great so far, mate. I can't remember seeing you paint Napoleonics before, is this a first?
Looking forward to seeing this one progress.

Nice face Tony, very rosy cold complexion there, just need some nose and moustache and snot ice.
It's a great figure Tony, looking forward to the final piece!!

Nick I think I recall Tony painting the Andrea 90 mm French grenadier guard some time ago mate.

Don, Keith, Brian, Pedro, Marc, Joe, Yong, Nick and Mark - thank you all for your very kind comments.

This is certainly not my first Napoleonic figure Nick. Mark is correct and in addition I also painted a Verlinden bust of old Boney many years ago. It's not a period of history I have spent much time studying but this particular figure has always seemed to capture the sorrowful nature of the frozen hell endured by the Grande Aemee on that long road back from Moscow.

Tony I've got a stiff neck looking at your figure so I had to sort it before it became permanent. Is that because your down under mate.Really captured the cold flesh tones Tony.

Brian, thanks mate. Actually it was the first time I tried to upload a photo to pF using my iPhone . I wont be doing that again.

Derek, Ben, Zeno and Brian - thanks guys I really appreciate your comments.

I did a little bit more on this figure last night (in between watching Australia throw away The Ashes and watching Chris Froome win the Tour de France). Some more pics in a few days.

Hello Tony, I'm planning to do a cold weather figure myself. I like the cold look of the face that you have accomplished, and am interested in the colors you have used. Looking forward to your WIP, and new photos. Best of luck with the painting of this excellent figure. Regards, SG:happy:

    Hi SG,

The cold skin palette is a combination of Jo Sonja colours.

The basic skin tone was created with Flesh Tone, Naples Yellow and Titanium White to make it paler than the normal colour.

I then added some Prussian Blue and mixed in a little Napthol Crimson to create a purple filter that I washed on in every decreasing amounts to create the shaded tones.

For the deeper shadows I added a little bit of Olive Green to my purple mix and once again applied it in very dilute filters to gradually build up the colour.

I then went back and added the upper highlights using my base colour mixed with titanium white and a little dab of the purple hue.

Around the bottom of the nose and the nostrils I applied a wash of Napthol Crimson. On the lips I added a bit more Prussian Blue.
