Andy's Maori Scout bust mate...

Hi guys,

A slack week last week, but got back into it over the weekend.

Here is the Maori bust almost complete. I finished painting the moko on the right hand side of the face.. As you can see from the closeup, the moko has now been shaded and highlighted. The moko base colour is a mix of 1 part Pthalo Green to 3 parts raw umber. The highlight colour is the base colour with Sap Green added. The shadow colour is the base colour with more raw umber added

I've also added the feathers to the headress. The large greeny/brown feathers are supposed to be tail feathers from the native New Zealand bird the Kakapo, which vary in colour from bright green to brown. The Kakapo is a flightless, nocturnal ground dwelling bird that was once plentiful across new Zealand, but its population has been devastated by feral cats and it is now endangered.

I've also included a close up of the greenstone hei-tiki pendant worn around the neck. The eyes of the pendant have been inlaid with mother of pearl which give the eyes a slightly metallic sheen.

The only things left to do now are the paint the ear jewelery and mount the bust to a new bust plinth I ordered from Ron Tamburini.

Outstanding brush work, love the harmony of colours, the moko colours combined with the great skin tones make it seem like it's actually tattoed in the skin and not sitting on top. You southern hemisphere boys are certainly teaching the world a few lessons in painting Maori's. The photo bottom row second from the right looks real.
