After almost a year away from the brushes I returned today and started on the Iroquois Bust by Stormtrooper Miniatures.

Above you see the oil mixture for the base coating over Humbrol #121 for the flesh I use for Native Americans.

20% Burnt Sienna
40% Yellow Ochre
40% Raw Umber

This is applied over the Humbrol and then the excess wiped off with a flat edged brush leaving the humbrol showing through. I then apply yellow where the humbrol shows through and wait an hour for the oils to soak through.

Above are the brshes I use only for doing this procedure of flesh all lined up and ready for use.

The above two photos show the yellow applied to the highlighted areas and awaiting the hour on the timer and I will blend the yellow into the base and then apply titanium white to the same areas I applied the yellow.........damm....it feels good to be painting again. I really missed doing this.

The blending of the yellow into the base coat of oils is complete. Now we add the white to the same areas we added yellow before.

Above, white is added to the pallette and applied to the same areas we applied the yellow.

Above you can see the white has been added to the head and torso in exactly the same areas we applied yellow in the previous step. Now we wait another hour for the oils to soak in and blend the white out.

The photos above show the different angles of the white applied to head / torso and hands.

After waiting an hour I blended out the white and now am ready to very sparingly add red to the fleshtones.

More to come after adding red and blending it into the flesh in highlight aresa.

As IO apply the red in small dots on the highlight areas I feather blend this into the previous colors.

Now I will wait a couple of days with the painted areas sitting under a 60 watt bulb for them to dry.

Guy looking nice so far I see our techniques are the same dare I say based on Verlinden? I have found lately this mix was getting too yellow dominant to my eye and stated using flesh or yellow ochre oil colour sometimes in place of the yellow, sometimes replacing the white. I also found the light I was painting under was giving me one result then looking at the dried flesh tones in sunlight would help me adjust (got an Actaulite last year so that helped enormously). I continually recommend the Verlinden way for mates who want to start out on figures it is a great basic technique to build on and from which to develop your own style. Not for everyone I know but helpful anyway. I love the pad you mix the paints on I assume you wipe it off and reuse with the guide underneath? Any chance of a snap of how you've laid that out. Look forward to the next instalment.

JimmyS - Yes, it is a modified version of the Verlinden way to paint flesh. Below are the formulas I use as a guideline for each mix.

As you can see I have used this pallett many many times.

The formula is on a regular sheet of copy paper and inserted into a page protector.

This looks a great SBS !! I sometimes use the Verlinden technique also but not so much these days but always worth a revisit .
