My first kit was the Airfix 1/72 Mosquito. Remeber by putting invasion strips on it and there were too many on it!! It ended up flying out a window when the family did one of its many moves. Just like Marijn i have never let the 'other' activities get in the way and i have not had a break yet.

My dad was traveling a lot for our family business and returned one day with the Black Magic, a Revell Type "S" kit of the M-4 Sherman tank. We built it together on the folding green card table in the tiny dining room. The delicate figures were what really caught my attention, though, and thus began, in 1957, a lifelong love of plastic model figures. (This thread doesn't include toy soldiers; I had stolen my first army man from a neighbor about two years before!)

My first exposure to scale models was a 1/72 (possibly, maybe 1/48) Lancaster bomber, built by my father.......

Many years later, my first model was a blue Messerschmidt 109......

My first painted model was an M1 Bradley IFV, even with groundwork. Crude, but a start.


I remember having an Catalouge of available kits, and reading (and re-reading) it.

I suppose the idea of dioramas is what stuck n my head.

I realise now that many dioramas need a human element of some kind.

So I ended up evolving in to figures.

Life got in the way, then stumbled across this site.


Have enjoyed the challenge and satisfaction ever since.

Now if other peoples plans wouldn't keep getting in the way.....

Also an armor guy. I'm not sure if a tank was my VERY first model. It was probably Ral Partha D & D miniatures. I do remember building a Knight Rider car with my brother and then sending it down the driveway with an Estes rocket motor in the trunk!. But when there was a hobby shop here, It was the Verlinden magazines and such that caught my eye, and I was hooked! I've built lots of different things over the years but armor and minis/figures are where it's at for me.

My first interest was science fiction.

But my first few models were all planes

I started with Tamiya 1/35th scale AFV's and figures back in 1974, and I switched to figures in the 1980's when Verlinden brought out their magnificent range of 120mm resin figures. The colour catalogues of Verlinden and Tamiya were more exciting than porn in those days. I've had several lengthy breaks from modelling during that time, but I've always come back to it with greater enthusiasm.

i was home sick & mum brought home an airfix "waterloo british horse artillery" in about 1975. i then built painted & ruined my way through the airfix, matchbox & esci catalogues

Started in about 1973 when I got an HMS victory plastic kit for Christmas, built this in about a week and decided that I like to build things. My father then bought me a few planes and cars and a box of plastic injected foreign legion 1/35th figures which I had great fun painting especially all the red blood, was good fun at 9 years old.



Built some more ships and cars etc until I discovered a new toy shop in town that was selling Tamiya figures and tanks, all my pocket money went on the collecting the German figure sets and I managed to get my parents to by me the occasional tank.


A local BMSS model club opened in the library opposite my house which I started to attend in 1979 and discovered figures and painting in oils. Managed to purchase my first metal figure in 1980 and started my first attempts at painting in oils straight onto the metal LOL, been painting figures on and off ever since and attending the odd show. Had a bit of a beak for a short while when the children were born but I always seemed to squeeze in at least 1 to 2 figures painted a year.
