Here's my version of Andrea's classic WWI German soldier bust. A little work yet to be done before it's completely finished, but it's basically done. I'll be giving a seminar on my painting of this bust at this year's Chicago show. For that reason, in the interest of keeping the material "fresh" for those attending the seminar, I'll have to refrain from discussing techniques, color mixes, etc. Sorry guys, I hope you understand, and I'll be happy to divulge all after the Chicago show. Hope to see many of you in Chicago!

Great work as usual! I won't be attending Chicago, this year (I gotta get there at some point ;) ), so I hope you will indulge me by answering a question, which is not about your technique. I the shadow across his eyes painted on or is it an artifact of the photo? Also, I am working on some WWI German stormtroopers at the moment, so I hope you don't mind I saved your pic.

Thanks for the kind words guys!

Matthew - the shadow across the upper part of his face is just a result of the strong overhead lighting at my workbench. Attached is a pic taken a little earlier in the painting process in which I tilted the figure back for a better look at the face. (the teeth and shirt collar are not painted in this pic).

    Jason,
That is what I assumed, but the effect was so cool I had to ask.

    Brillaint

The flesh and uniform tones go together brilliantly. The face colour is excellent as well as the uniform presentation. Very well done.

A superb rendition Jason. The fleshtones are smooth and perfectly blended and the texture effects on the uniform make it look like real wool. It's a deceptively simple bust but full of painting challenges, and you seem to have met them all.

Thank you for your nice comments! I'm glad several of you noticed the texture effect I tried to achieve on the tunic.

Tony - yes, deceptively simple is a great way to describe this bust, as I realized once I got into the painting.
