If that vest is like the Luftwaffe vests it did not have much of a back. They were made to make you float chest up so that if you were knocked out when you went in the water you would not drown. My books with photos are at work but I will check tomorrow.

Gary, good reference on that second link! Love the whistle, Young you have to get that whistle in there! Good luck, looking forward to more brilliance from your hands on this one!

This should be another of your classics, any chance of an SBS?

Now this is the kind of thing the community should be used for more often - so there are no complaints after the model is produced that something isn't accurate (y)

Best of luck finding the info you're looking for Young.

I have been looking for this all day off and on. I have the book that the photo comes form and it has tow photos of that vest but never shows the back I found different shot of the same clothes laid out flat and again the back was not visible. it seems to be a very early vest. even a few years latter they were using inflatable vest much like the Luftwaffe. There is a kapok filed vest the two services had in common.

Here is the front. I should also note that photos of German Sailors wearing vests is very uncommon. I found one photo showing one man wearing the vest above and that was from behind. I did not fined any shots of U-Boat sailors wearing them.

I know that is what I found when looking for photos of that vest. You almost never see them with a vest on. The uniforms are seldom what you would call regulation when they are on duty. Only when they are coming to port do you see them in that uniform.

The following two models are the only ones that keep coming up on searches:

    Schwimmweste pneumatisch 734 10-30
    [IMG]

    Kapok Schwimmweste 10-76B1
    [IMG]

If I knew who they were it might not hurt to contact the author of the book, museum or the private collection. I still haven't seen the cited sources of the images.

I believe the source of the photos you posted are from "German Soldiers of WWII" which I believe is an off shoot of Militaria Magazine maybe you could contact them and see if the collector who shared his items might be able to help you.

Ahh, is there an authors name any where mentioned? I do not have the mentioned book -

Yep I have that. Jean de Lagarde

I have gone through the books I had at work no luck. Not in Mollo's book "The Armed Forces of WWII", or my copies of" Luftwaffe Vs RAF" vol 1 and 2 which has tons of photos of life jackets. Only the two we have both found are in that one.

Well you found photos of them wearing them which was more then I found. Those are all the inflatable kind, which is not what he is looking for. But again I could not find a photo of a crewman wearing even those.
