Printers Ink Question

Hi again. I just received in the mail some silver printers ink I ordered. I was wondering if someone could enlighten me on whether it matters that it is in a liquid form as opposed to the gold printers ink I received from another supplier that is in a hard paste like form. With the latter, I am thinning it with Humbrol carrier as Herb kindly suggested and it works great. What about the liquid silver though? Is it just as good as the gold type? Do I need to thin it as well? Can I mix oils to shade with it? Drying times different etc?

    Thanks,

    Gary D

Sorry I don't have the answer to your question but where did you get the ink from? I can't find silver anywhere.

I emailed them a long time ago and they never responded. Seems like their website has been down forever now.

Well, when I use the paste stuff, I usually add thinner and Humbrol(almost ever Humbrol 21 Gloss Black). But when in the more thick flowing kind I just add very little thinner or none at all.

Thanks Janne. Herb suggested I use the clear carrier from unstirred Humbrol tins. This seems to work just fine except they dry very fast. The silver I received is almost the consistancy of vallejo acrylic paints. In other words, fairly runny so maybe it is fine just as it is. Only one way to find out I guess is to experiment. I was hoping someone had experience with the stuff first.

    Thanks,

I use both gold and silver ink, the real thick stuff. I got it from a local printer, I just walked in one day and asked for some and they gave me a half tin of each. That was about 15 years ago, I have given some away to friends, the quantity I have left will outlive me. It’s really nice stuff to work with, I put a small amount on a piece of grease proof paper and have a small pot of daler rowney thinners that I dip the brush into, but not to much, then work the end of the brush into the blob of ink until you get a nice workable paste, you can vary the viscosity of the mix by adding more or less thinner. A small thin amount normally dries over night in my hotbox, I sometimes mix it with burnt umber and burnt sienna oils, remember that a small amount goes a long way.
    Cheers

Hi all. I got my silver printers ink from Steve at S.K. Miniatures. He picked some up at Euromilitaire and is now carrying it. It is VERY difficult to get and after all the searching I have been through I consider myself lucky to get it.
Again, the pale gold and regular gold (I would consider antique gold) came from Michael Roberts. Military Miniatures Warehouse apparently also carry it. I am not sure if Steve handles the gold or not. Perhaps just ask! All have websites you can order from.
