    For a True Friend.

There is something of Roy I would like share with you all.

When we started working together, he was very concerned that I wanted to make a commercial figure out of his wonderful 'Storm Child' Euro-Militaire winner!

I managed to convince him that it would be well received,,, which it was and still is!!

He was worried that, because it was of children after Hiroshima, that he would be censured for such a piece, so I asked him why he had created it in the first place?!

He said that, " I don't just want to create another soldier with a weapon.. I want to tell a real story of real people!"

I wanted to let you know that he was very proud of its popularity and it was a real personal achievement for Roy.

I am very thankful that I was able to help him achieve that in his life!

I profoundly believe that he was a true miniature ARTIST, telling the human story in war with that piece and with 'God's Children'; showing the most poignant victims of conflict... The Innocent!!

I, for one, intend to honour this man's unique contribution to the art-form he loved. He broke new ground and I shall continue in that vain.

Once again, I miss my friend terribly and wish Pat, his Wife and his children, every sympathy at this time.

    Bill Love.

I was shocked to see this thread!
What sad news, my condolences to his family.

Whilst I had yet to have the honour of meeting the man in person I was greatly looking forward to it, as we had many pleasurable chats on the phone.

What a shame, here's to you Roy!

    This is terrible, really tragic.
I first met Roy some years back and always saw him at the Kent shows. He first introduced me to magisculpt at a stand he had at Euromilitaire, and I used to pop up to the Welling club to buy my supplies of putty from him. He always had time to give- nothing was too much trouble. His passing will leave a massive hole. My thoughts go out to his family.

What a shock this is. Roy was one of the nicest guys I've met through the hobby and he'll be dearly missed.

Hardy, anyone that knows his family, please pass on my condolences.

    Roy was a good one.

When he confirmed my orders, he always included a warm personal note instead of the cold electronic reply that is all too common these days. He was genuinely appreciative.
The pieces I have of his now take on much more significance.
    Pat and kids,
I am truly sorry for your loss.
Know that Roy was much loved and will be missed out here as well.

    I'm in complete shock...

I feel honoured to be able to call him a friend, unfortunately only meeting at the modelling shows over the last years and emailing. After world expo, I really felt bad about not having been able to spent some more time with a number of people. Roy being one of the most obvious, I was thinking though "oh well, we'll have plenty of time to chat at Euro!" :(

I'll miss you Roy! The people on this forum are not exagerating, you truly were one of the kindest man I have ever met!!! (and this was showing in your work)

    Thinking of you,

I never met Roy, and that is my loss as everything said about him here and elsewhere shows him to have been a talented, quiet, genuinely nice person.
It would surely have been my pleasure to make his acquaintance.
My deepest sympathies are with his family and close friends.

From all that I had heard about him, and my experiences with him via email while painting his Ronin... it was obvious that this was the kind of person you like to be around! He was encouraging and answered my questions with a compiment or kind word attached to each bit of info that I needed.

What a terrible loss for his friends and family!

    My deepest condolences!!!

    Sad News

Hardy, This is terrible news. I saw Roy in Girona & spoke with him a few times there little expecting that it would the last time we would speak............

If possible, please pass on my condolences to his wife & family. He was a true gentleman of the hobby & it is ironic and sad that, after winning BoS at Euro, he is taken from us. He came to my local show, Sword & Lance, last year when Marijn was guest speaker & we had a good chat then - he was never short of a kind & supportive word.

Very sad indeed to lose a friend & a great loss to the hobby as well.

I did not know Roy in person but through his work and the loss is just as impactful. What a shame to lose someone who really had a unique vision that I personally related to. I was always delighted in what he would do next and now not to have that to look forward to is quite saddening indeed. Sympathy to his family.

As we are all aware, Roy was a really brilliant modeller but what made him so special was his personality. He was, without doubt, one of the loveliest human beings I have ever met. On the modelling front, he had no secrets but was willing to share his expertise with everyone and anyone. His enthusiasm was infectious and his generosity seemed boundless. I find it very hard to come to terms with the fact that we will never see that great beaming smile again.

    Now, too.
I think he's supporting us at heaven.
    Please sleep peacefully.

    I am truly in shock!

I've never had the pleasure of meeting Roy but have long admired his work. My condolences and prayers for Roy and his family.

It would be nice if someone could show his family this thread, that they know that they are in our prayers and that Roy was held in high esteem by everyone who knew him.

His wife Pat knows our feelings!

    Hi Bone,

Dave Maddox, a great friend of Roy's, said on this thread that Pat, his wife, is looking in on our comments regularly... so she will know how highly we esteemed Roy.

Although I've never met Roy I've been looking out for his articles in MilitaryModelling.
He amazed me with both his "Storm Child" and "Gods Children".
With these sculpts he captured the terrible impact war has on children making these sculpts true pieces of art.
We, the beginners in this hobby, could have learned so much from this skillfull man.
To his wife, family and friends my condolenses.

    Willem
