The remainder of the sleeve will be worked over top of this and be smoothed into the rest with some fine sanding.

The sleeve after the cuff has cured. The larger folds were worked into the putty while it was still soft. Once this had cured a little refining was done with files and fine sandpaper.


The sleeve needs to be full, especially around the area of the elbow. This will be done next.

I was wondering how you were doing. I'm sort of getting the feeling that you're kind of struggling with this project As much as I like to see more and see more often updates don't let this figure turn into a burn out project buddy !

We all appreciate you doing this detailed SBS for us and I for one already have a hardcover binder waiting for when the last pictures are in :lol:

Marvin, Thanks buddy. I'm not stuggling, but I'm itching to finish him. I can't help but feel the "instructive" nature of the project has declined over time (much to my disappointment). It has been hard at times to focus my attention on him. I have both sleeves done now and will post pics later today. The remainder of the project will center around doing all the little details, i.e. buttons, buckles, canteen hat trim etc etc. Lastly there WILL be an sbs on sculpting hands.~Gary

It's one thing to sculpt a figure for itself. It's way much harder to sculpt a figure in order to demonstrate a technique.

One has to consider this fact to appreciate the amount of dedication, time and energy that Gary has put in this SBS since he started it.

Did you use a divider to get the seams to follow the outline of the coat? I've had mixed results and am curious what you're thoughts are.

John, I drew all of the lines on the seams on the jacket with a drawing pencil. Then I traced over the lines with a fresh X-acto knife. I then traced over those lines with the blade slightly angled so it would remove a bit of the material. This "channel" was then widened with a fine file.~Gary

All of the jacket seams have been worked into the figure. With the exception of the buttons the jacket is complete.

The sbs on sculpting the hand will be next.

The SCULPTING 101 SBS will be wrapped up with the detail work that remains on the figure starting from the hat on down to the shoes.
